Early Deficit Too Much to Overcome for Women’s Lacrosse in Waukesha

Titans kickoff three-game homestand, April 16

WAUKESHA, Wis. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team could not keep pace with Carroll University Saturday afternoon, April 12, as the Titans (6-7, 1-1 CCIW) dropped a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin game on the road, 17-6, to the Pioneers (8-3, 2-0 CCIW).

Senior Lizzie Rymarcsuk (Lake Zurich, Ill.-Saint Viator) made 16 saves in between the posts. Fellow senior Mia Fiandaca (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles North) led the team with six caused turnovers alongside a team-best four ground balls.

Fiandaca was also IWU's offensive leader, notching a hat trick in the loss. Junior Avery Setzler (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) tacked on two goals, while junior Carleigh Fountain (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg) was credited with IWU's other goal. Juniors Anelise DiGiovanni (Lockport, Ill.-Lockport Township) and Sarah Riepe (Aurora, Ill.-St. Francis), and Fountain tallied one assist each.

Carroll took control in the opening quarter, outsourcing the Titans, 9-1. IWU's lone goal came via a free position by Fiandaca, her 23rd goal of the season.

The Pios scored the first two goals of the second period to stretch their advantage to double digits, but Fiandaca scored to cut the deficit to nine, 11-2. Setzler buried a shot off an assist from Riepe to end the half, 12-3.

Illinois Wesleyan scored three more times in the final 30 minutes of play, eventually falling, 17-6.

The Titans return to action Wednesday, April 16, with a 4 p.m. contest against North Central College. The game will mark the start of a three-game run at Tucci Stadium for the Titans.
