Women’s Lacrosse Heads to Carthage for CCIW Tournament Semifinal

Titans eye revenge against Firebirds Wednesday, April 30

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team travels to Carthage College for the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Tournament Semifinal contest Wednesday, April 30. Action is set to begin at 7 p.m. at Art Keller Field. 

The Titans (8-8, 3-2 CCIW) enter the tournament as the No. 3 seed, and most recently downed Elmhurst University Saturday, April 26, winning 20-4. Senior Mia Fiandaca (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles North) broke the program's single-season caused turnover record, as her eight caused turnovers in the game pushed her past the previous mark of 50. The senior also led the team in goals with five, finishing with a team-best five points. Juniors Sadie Newton (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) and Sarah Riepe (Aurora, Ill.-St. Francis) tallied team-leads in draw controls and ground balls, finishing with eight and seven, respectively. Senior Lizzie Rymarcsuk (Lake Zurich, Ill.-Saint Viator) notched the win in goal behind seven saves in 60 minutes of work.

Fiandaca leads the team with 38 points, recording the mark behind a team-high 36 goals. Senior Avery Setzler (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) and freshman Maddie Gibson (Fenton, Mo.-Rockwood Summit) are tied for second with 35 points apiece. Setzler's total has come on 23 goals and 12 assists, both of which rank third on the team, while Gibson sits in second on the squad with 13 assists to go along with 22 goals. Newton follows Fiandaca in goals, as she enters Wednesday with 24. Junior Anelise DiGiovanni (Lockport, Ill.-Lockport Township) leads the crew with 15 assists. 

At the draw, Newton leads the way with 60 draw controls, followed by 50 from Fiandaca, and Setzler's 28. Fiandaca holds the team-high in ground balls, having scooped up 47. Rymarcsuk closely follows with 46, while Setzler rounds out the top three with 44 ground balls on the season.

On the defensive end, Fiandaca paces the team with 57 caused turnovers, and enters the contest six shy of tying the program's career caused turnover record. The St. Charles, Ill. native enters the game with 131 caused turnovers in her career, and eyes the record set by Dani Engelbreit, who accumulated 137 from 2016-19. Newton ranks second on the team with 31 caused turnovers, followed by 21 from Riepe. 

In goal, Rymarcsuk has made 152 saves in 852:15 minutes of work, and holds a .484 save percentage on the season. She brings an 8-8 record and a 11.41 goals against average on the season into Wednesday's matchup.

IWU looks to avenge a 10-8 loss to Carthage (12-3, 4-1 CCIW) in the last meeting between the two squads Saturday, April 19. Trailing 9-3, the Titans came back to make it a one-score game late, 9-8, before ultimately falling. Fiandaca totaled three goals for a trio of points to go along with a team-best five draw controls. Riepe led the team in ground balls and caused turnovers, with six and five, respectively. Rymarcsuk made 12 saves in goal to keep the Green and White in the game. Meeting for the 13th time, CC holds a 7-5 edge in the series. The Firebirds downed North Central College, 9-5, Saturday, April 26, to claim the No. 2 seed in the tournament.
