Men’s Tennis Celebrates Senior Day, Falls to Augie

Titans honor McCoy postgame

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Playing in its regular season finale, the Illinois Wesleyan University men's tennis team fell to Augustana College Sunday, April 27. With the loss, IWU dips to 5-13 overall, and 1-6 in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin action, while Augie boosts its record to 12-4 overall, and 6-1 in league play. The win locked the Vikings into a three-way share of the CCIW Regular Season Championship, sharing the title with Carthage College and North Central College.

After the conclusion of the match, head coach Sam Totten and the Titans honored fifth-year Ryan McCoy (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Rolling Meadows) on his senior day.

Illinois Wesleyan logged a win in doubles play, as juniors Ian Turnbull (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) and Ben Vigneri (Casper, Wyo.-Phillips Exeter Academy) teammed up for a win at No. 1 doubles behind a score of 6-3. IWU could not secure another win in paired play, ultimately dropping the one-point decision.

Playing against tough competition, sophomore Thad Dillow (Effingham, Ill.-Effingham) nearly gutted out the win at No. 4 singles. After dropping the first set, 6-4, Dillow came back to win the second behind a score of 6-2, forcing a super tiebreaker. The sophomore ran out of steam, falling 10-5.

Illinois Wesleyan looks to be the No. 7 seed entering the CCIW Tournament, hosted by Augustana Thursday-Saturday, May 1-3. The quarterfinals contests are scheduled for Thursday, May 1.
