Sam Totten Year-by-Year Record

Sam Totten, former University High and Augustana standout player, was named head men’s tennis coach at Illinois Wesleyan University fall of 2018.

Entering his eighth season as head coach, Totten's overall record is 50-71 having coached two three-time All-College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin players, Demetrios Triantafel (2018-29, 2020-21, 2021-22) and Ian Turnbull (2022-23, 2023-24, 2024-25), both of whom earned the honors in their first collegiate seasons.

Totten, who graduated from Augustana in May 2018, had a celebrated college career capped by being named College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Man of the Year for 2017-18. He helped the Vikings to their first conference championship in 33 years and the program's first-ever NCAA Division III tournament appearance. He was a four-year All-CCIW selection, three times on the first team, and also won Augustana's MVP and Hardest Worker awards three seasons.

As a senior, Totten led the Vikings in doubles wins with a mark of 21-13 and was 18-10 in singles play. A two-time team captain, he finished his career sixth all-time in singles wins at Augustana with a record of 61-40 and third in doubles victories with a 77-41 ledger. His combined record of 138-81 places him third in school history for total wins. He ended his career as half of the Vikings' winningest doubles combo ever after teaming with Eric Pohl for a 69-36 mark.

"I am excited to take on the role of head coach of men's tennis at Illinois Wesleyan,” said Totten. “Having just finished up my career as a college player, I'm looking forward to continue my involvement in the sport as a coach. My experience of playing at Augustana will help me greatly as I move into this new position. I will be familiar with the CCIW and I understand what goes into building a successful program."

With a 3.97 grade-point average as an engineering physics and applied mathematics major, Totten was named to the third team of the CoSIDA Google Cloud Division III Academic All-American At-Large squads and was an academic all-district choice for two seasons. Totten was a member of Sigma Pi Sigma (physics), Pi Mu Epsilon (mathematics) and Phi Beta Kappa honor societies.

Totten has volunteered for the Illinois State Special Olympics and as a tennis fundraiser for St. Jude Children's Hospital. He also served as a student assistant for the Augustana women's program during his senior year and has worked as a tennis instructor at Bloomington’s Crestwicke Country Club and State Farm Park and at Normal Parks & Recreation.
