Women’s Lacrosse Falls at McDaniel

Titans drop first contest of spring break trip

WESTMINSTER, Md. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team dropped its first of two games over spring break, as the Titans fell to McDaniel College, 17-3, Sunday, March 9. With the loss, Illinois Wesleyan stumbles to 3-3, while McDaniel improves to 4-2 on the season.

IWU was led in scoring by sophomore Chloe Heyl (Houston, Texas-Emery/Weiner), who registered two points consisting of one goal and an assist. Junior Sadie Newton (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) and freshman Carly Bajusz (Naperville, Ill.-Naperville North) also notched goals, while freshman Maddie Gibson (Fenton, Mo.-Rockwood Summit) recorded an assist.

Senior Avery Setzler (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) led the Titans at the draw, recording three draw controls. Freshman Cassie Fischmann (Normal, Ill.-Normal Community) scooped up a team-high two ground balls, while the trio of  Bajusz, Gibson, and sophomore Bri Steil (Peoria, Ill.-Dunlap) all caused one turnover apiece.

Logging the first 45 minutes between the posts, senior Lizzie Rymarcsuk (Lake Zurich, Ill.-Saint Viator) recorded 10 saves with 14 goals allowed for a .417 save percentage. Freshman Marli Brown (Kansas City, Mo.-Notre Dame de Sion) was in goal for the final 15 minutes of action, making two saves with three goals allowed.

After McDaniel scored the first eight goals of the game, Newton got the Titans on the board, as she buried a pass from Heyl at the 9:06 mark in the second quarter. The Green Terror responded with a goal shortly after to extend their lead back to eight.

IWU was the last to crack the scoreboard in the opening half, as Bajusz drew a foul to garner a free-position. The freshman made the most of the opportunity, as she recorded the goal to bring the score to 9-2 with 4:51 remaining in the second period of action.

McDaniel registered the first five goals of the second half to put the game out of reach for the Titans, but not before Heyl notched a goal of her own to close out the third. The sophomore used a pass from Gibson to backhand one in with just over a minute remaining in the third, 14-3. The Green Terror scored all three goals in the final 15 minutes, bringing the final score to 17-3.

Illinois Wesleyan continues its trip in Maryland, as the Titans head to St. Mary's City, Md., to take on St. Mary's College (Md.) Wednesday, March 12, at 12 p.m. ET.
