Women’s Lacrosse Drops Duel with Knights

Titans continue road stretch at Augsburg Saturday, March 22

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Playing its first contest in 10 days, the Illinois Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team dropped its contest at Calvin University Wednesday, March 19, falling 19-4. With the loss, the Titans stumble to 3-4, while Calvin ups its record to 4-2.

Illinois Wesleyan was led in scoring by junior Sadie Newton (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community), who scored two goals for a pair of points. IWU's other goals came from senior Avery Setzler (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) and freshman Makenna McVey (Dunlap, Ill.-Dunlap), notching the first goal and point of her young career.

Junior Prissilla Tucker (Santa Rosa, Calif.-Windsor) totaled career-highs of five ground balls and three caused turnovers to lead the Green and White defensively. Newton was second with three ground balls. The duo also led the team with three draw controls apiece.

In goal, senior Lizzie Rymarcsuk (Lake Zurich, Ill.-Saint Viator) made 20 saves, just one shy of her career-best, finishing with a .541 save percentage. Freshman Marli Brown (Kansas City, Mo.-Notre Dame de Sion) finished the game between the iron, making two saves.

The Titans were outnumbered in shots (46-11), ground balls (21-17), draw controls (15-10) and caused turnovers (16-4), while going 12-for-23 on clear attempts, while Calvin had a 12-for-14 day. IWU had the saves advantage, 22-4.

Rymarcsuk got the Titans going, as she made two key saves to start the game. After Calvin won the opening draw, the senior stopped the first shot of the game, and followed it up by saving CU's first free position attempt.

The Knights scored the first two goals of the game early in the opening quarter.

Newton got the Titans on the board, as she fired a low hopper in from the eight-meter mark to cut the deficit to 6-1 with 2:52 left in the first period.

After a Calvin turnover gave the Green and White another quick offensive possession, this time with freshman Carly Bajusz (Naperville, Ill.-Naperville North) feeding Setzler a pass over the Knights defender. Setzler utilized the helper, as she found the back of the net to make it 6-2, doing so with 25 seconds left to close out the opening period.

Newton drew a foul, and used it to her advantage as she scored a goal to close the gap to 6-3 with 11:51 left in the second quarter. Calvin went on a run the rest of the half, as the Knights scored the other seven goals in the remaining time to take a 13-3 advantage into halftime.

Illinois Wesleyan could not cut into the deficit, ultimately falling 19-4.

The Titans will continue their stretch of road games, as they head to Augsburg University Saturday, March 22. Action is set to begin at 11 a.m. on Edor Nelson Field.
