Women’s Lacrosse Cruises to Win at Augsburg

Titans snap three-game losing skid

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team coasted to a 21-3 victory at Augsburg University Saturday, March 22. With the win, IWU snaps its three-game losing skid, improving its record to 4-4 on the season, while the Auggies drop to 0-2.

The Titan offense was led by junior Sadie Newton (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community), who scored a career-best eight points by way of six goals and two assists. Senior Avery Setzler (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) added four goals and an assist for five points, while juniors Anelise DiGiovanni (Lockport, Ill.-Lockport Township) and Sarah Riepe (Aurora, Ill.-St. Francis) each finished with three points. DiGiovanni posted one goal and a pair of assists, and Riepe recorded two goals and a helper.

Setzler and Newton also led the team at the draw, finishing with nine and eight draw controls, respectively. The nine from Setzler smashed her previous career-high of six. Sophomore Bri Steil (Peoria, Ill.-Dunlap) led the defense, finishing with a career-high four caused turnovers, and tying her career-best of four ground balls, both of which were team-bests. Sophomore Chloe Heyl (Houston, Texas-Emery/Weiner) was second with three ground balls and two caused turnovers, both setting new career-highs.

Splitting time between the iron, senior Lizzie Rymarcsuk (Lake Zurich, Ill.-Saint Viator) notched the win in goal, as she made two saves while allowing two goals in the first 30 minutes of action. Freshman Marli Brown (Kansas City, Mo.-Notre Dame de Sion) finished in goal for the Green and White, making one save with one goal allowed.

Illinois Wesleyan held hefty advantages in shots (43-10), shots on goal (33-5), draw controls (20-8), and ground balls (19-12), while forcing 25 Augsburg errors while only committing 12. The Titans converted 10 of their 13 clear attempts, and limited the Auggies to a 7-for-19 showing. AU held the statistical edge in saves, 12-3.

Winning the opening draw, the Titans quickly cracked the scoreboard, as junior Carleigh Fountain (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg) fed Newton for a goal to take a 1-0 lead 15 seconds into the game. After Heyl scooped up a ground ball to gain possession for the Green and White, Riepe net her first goal of the contest. Setzler won the ensuing draw, leading to another Newton goal, as the Titans went ahead, 3-0, with 12:23 remaining in the first quarter.

Augsburg cut the deficit back to two, but not for long, as Setzler won the draw off the goal to set up the Illinois Wesleyan offense. After a shot from freshman Maddie Gibson (Fenton, Mo.-Rockwood Summit) went wide, DiGiovanni found Setzler for her first score of the contest to make it a 4-1 game at the 10:18 mark.

The Green and White would score the last four goals in the opening period, coming on scores from Gibson, Newton, Riepe, and Setzler, as IWU took an 8-1 lead into the second quarter.

Capitalizing on an Augsburg failed clear attempt, Newton dished a pass to Heyl, who drove to the side of the net for her first goal of the game. The Houston, Texas, native stayed hot, as she caused a turnover shortly after, scooped up the ground ball, and fired one to the back of the net to make it a 10-1 lead with 12:25 to play in the first half.

After the Auggies won the draw, freshman Carly Bajusz (Naperville, Ill.-Naperville North) forced a turnover to set up another scoring opportunity for the Titans. This time, Newton found Setzler, who completed an early hat trick, extending the lead to 11-1 at the 11:40 mark in the second quarter.

With goals from Gibson and DiGiovanni, IWU carried a 13-2 lead into halftime.

The third period was all Green and White, as the Titans delivered all five goals. Newton scored two straight goals, followed by one from Setzler. Bajusz scored back-to-back goals to close the period at 18-2 for the Titans.

Illinois Wesleyan coasted to the win, scoring three of the four goals in the final period to close out the score at 21-3.

The Titans continue their road trip, as they will play at University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point tomorrow, March 23, at 11 a.m. Links to the stream and live stats can be found on the women's lacrosse schedule page on iwusports.com.
