Women’s Lacrosse Upended by Wooster

Gibson scores first collegiate hat trick

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Battling rainy conditions for the second half of the game, the Illinois Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team fell to The College of Wooster, 20-8, inside Tucci Stadium Saturday, March 29. With the loss, IWU dips to 5-6, while the Fighting Scots improve to 9-1.

Illinois Wesleyan's offense was led by freshman Maddie Gibson's (Fenton, Mo.-Rockwood Summit) career day. Gibson notched her first collegiate hat trick en route to finishing with four points on four goals. Junior Anelise DiGiovanni (Lockport, Ill.-Lockport Township) notched a career-best four points, composed of two goals and two assists. Junior Carleigh Fountain (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg) totaled a team-best two assists.

Juniors Sarah Riepe (Aurora, Ill.-St. Francis) finished with three draw controls, tying her career-best, while Sadie Newton (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) posted two. Senior Lizzie Rymarcsuk (Lake Zurich, Ill.-Saint Viator) led the team with five ground balls, followed by three apiece from Riepe and senior Avery Setzler (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington).

Defensively, Riepe and senior Mia Fiandaca (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles North) each posted a team-high three caused turnovers. Rymarcsuk was tagged with the loss in goal, making 13 saves in 60 minutes of work.

As a team, IWU was outnumbered in shots (39-18), shots on goal (33-11), ground balls (34-17), draw controls (19-11), and Wooster went 14-for-16 on clears, while the Titans were limited to a 9-of-19 showing. IWU made 13 saves in goal to the Fighting Scots' three.

Rymarcsuk made a save to set up the Green and White offense, which resulted in Gibson generating a free-position attempt. The freshman buried her shot to get the Titans on the board, trailing 8-1, with 56 seconds remaining in the first period.

After Wooster jumped ahead 12-1, Illinois Wesleyan responded with back-to-back goals. Fountain found Fiandaca for a goal, and IWU won the ensuing draw to keep possession with 8:40 remaining in the second quarter. Gibson net her second goal of the game, as she buried a pass from DiGiovanni to make it 12-3 with 7:01 left to play in the first half.

The Fighting Scots scored the last goal of the quarter to take a 13-3 lead into halftime.

The Titans struck first in the third period, as Rymarcsuk opened the quarter with a save. Freshman Sophie Shore (St. Peters, Mo.-Francis Howell Central) scooped up the ground ball to set up the offense. After a successful clear, Fountain fed DiGiovanni for a goal to make it 13-4 at the 13:01 mark.

Following three straight Wooster goals, Gibson collected her hat trick off a pass from Setzler with 21 seconds remaining to close out the third period 16-5 in favor of the visitors.

Wooster struck first to open the final quarter of action, but IWU took the next two goals via scores by Gibson and DiGiovanni to make it 17-7. The deficit was too much to overcome, as Wooster would cruise to the 20-8 victory.

Illinois Wesleyan will enjoy a week off and is set to hit the road again, this time to Augustana College, Wednesday, April 9. Action is set to begin at Thorson-Lucken Field at 6 p.m.
