Women’s Lacrosse Stumbles at DePauw

Titans return to Tucci Stadium Saturday, March 29

GREENCASTLE, Ind. - On its fifth straight away game, the Illinois Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team fell, 18-3, at DePauw University Wednesday, March 26. The loss drops the Titans to 5-5 on the season, while DePauw improves to 4-4.

Five Titans registered a point in the contest, led by goals from juniors Sarah Riepe (Aurora, Ill.-St. Francis), Anelise DiGiovanni (Lockport, Ill.-Lockport Township) and Carleigh Fountain (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg). Freshman Makenna McVey (Dunlap, Ill.-Dunlap) notched her first collegiate assist, and senior Avery Setzler (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) also assisted on a score.

The reigning College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Offensive Player of the Week, junior Sadie Newton (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) led the team with four draw controls. The duo of Riepe and junior Prissilla Tucker (Santa Rosa, Calif.-Windsor) each tallied a team-high three ground balls.

Leading the defense, Riepe, Tucker, and Newton each recorded two caused turnovers apiece. Senior Lizzie Rymarcsuk (Lake Zurich, Ill.-Saint Viator) was tagged with the loss, making 13 saves in 45 minutes of work in goal. Freshman Marli Brown (Kansas City, Mo.-Notre Dame de Sion) finished in between the pipes for the Green and White, making a career-best three saves while allowing a goal in the final period of action.

After giving up the first eight goals of the game, the Titans seized their first scoring opportunity as Setzler caused a turnover. McVey fed Riepe for IWU's first score, making it 8-1 with 11:12 remaining in the second quarter.

Illinois Wesleyan's second goal of the game came from DiGiovanni, as she buried a dish from Setzler to bring the score 8-2 at the 9:10 mark. DePauw scored once more to take a 10-2 lead into halftime.

The deficit would be too much to overcome, as the Titans ultimately fell, 18-3.

The Green and White return home to host the College of Wooster Saturday, March 29, marking the first women's lacrosse game inside Tucci Stadium since March 2. Action is set to begin at 11 a.m., and IWU will honor 2024 graduate Britney Maldonado pregame for her outstanding senior season capped off by being named the Division III NCAA Statistical Champion in assists per game.
