Women’s Lacrosse Readies for Weekend Road Trip

Titans to face Augsburg & UW-Stevens Point March 22-23

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Embarking on a weekend road trip, the Illinois Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team will head to Minnesota and Wisconsin for two games over as many days Saturday-Sunday, March 22-23. IWU (3-4) kicks off the trip at Augsburg College Saturday, March 22, before taking on University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Sunday, March 23. Both games will begin at 11 a.m.

The Titans enter the weekend off a 19-4 loss at Calvin University Wednesday, March 19. Junior Sadie Newton (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) led the team with two points via two goals, while her and fellow junior Prissilla Tucker (Santa Rosa, Calif.-Windsor) each posted a team-best three draw controls. Tucker led the team with a career-high three caused turnovers, and senior Lizzie Rymarcsuk (Lake Zurich, Ill.-Saint Viator) notched the team-leads in ground balls, having scooped up six, and saves, as she finished with 20, one shy of her career-high.

Seniors Mia Fiandaca (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles North) and Avery Setzler (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) are tied for the team-high in points, each having recorded 15 on the season. Fiandaca has registered all on a team-best 15 goals, while Setzler is second in goals with 12, and has added three assists. Junior Carleigh Fountain (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg) is third on the team in points and goals, with 13 and nine, respectively. Freshman Maddie Gibson (Fenton, Mo.-Rockwood Summit) has made an immediate impact on the offense, as she leads the squad with six assists. The trio of Newton, junior Anelise DiGiovanni (Lockport, Ill.-Lockport Township), and freshman Carly Bajusz (Naperville, Ill.-Naperville North) are tied for second with five assists apiece. 

Leading the way in both categories, Fiandaca has accrued 30 ground balls and 31 caused turnovers. Setzler and Newton follow with 22 and 21 ground balls, respectively, while Newton, Bajusz, and freshman Brooke Ayres (Sun Prairie, Wis.-Sun Prairie East) are tied for second with 11 caused turnovers each. At the draw, Fiandaca and Newton sit at the top, each having recorded 25 draw controls, followed by Setzler's 12. 

In goal for the Green and White, Rymarcsuk has made 58 saves for a .453 save percentage in 372:15 minutes of work.

The Titans will meet the Auggies (0-1) on the field for the third time, with IWU walking away victorious in the two previous meetings. Most recently, Illinois Wesleyan defeated Augsburg 22-8 March 4, 2023. Fountain and Fiandaca led the offense with six points apiece, as Fiandaca totaled all via goals, while Fountain notched four goals and two assists. Rymarcsuk recorded the win in goal, as she made five saves in 30 minutes of work. AU's lone game of the season was a 21-5 loss to Marian University Wednesday, March 5. 

IWU and UWSP (0-5) will face each other for the first time, as the Pointers began their women's lacrosse program a season ago. UW-Stevens Point most recently fell to Elmhurst University, dropping a slim 10-9 contest Monday, March 17.
