Women’s Lacrosse Rallies Past Lake Forest

Titans move to 3-1

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team downed Lake Forest College, 11-8, Sunday, March 2, at Tucci Stadium. The Titans rolled to 3-1 on the season, winning their third straight, while the Foresters slipped to 0-2.

Junior Carleigh Fountain (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg) paced an IWU attack that saw seven different players register points. Fountain scored three goals and added an assist, while senior Avery Setzler (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) scored twice and assisted on another to finish with three points. Senior Mia Fiandaca (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles North), freshman Carly Bajusz (Naperville, Ill.-Naperville North), and junior Anelise DiGiovanni (Lockport, Ill.-Lockport Township) tallied two points apiece. Fiandaca and Bajusz notched two goals apiece, with DiGiovanni's points coming by way of a pair of assists.

Freshman Brooke Ayres (Sun Prairie, Wis.-Sun Prairie East) was credited with a team-high four caused turnovers, while Fiandaca and junior Sadie Newton (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) contributed three each. Setzler snagged a team-high six ground balls and Fiandaca secured five.

Newton, Fiandaca, and Setzler powered Illinois Wesleyan at the draw, as Newton tallied three draw controls. Fiandaca and Setzler notched two apiece.

In goal, senior Lizzie Rymarcsuk (Lake Zurich, Ill.-Saint Viator) earned her third win of the season. She collected six saves over 60 minutes as Lake Forest finished with a 22-20 edge in shots.

The Titans converted on 6-of-7 free position opportunities, while the Green and White defense limited the Foresters to 1-for-3. IWU converted 12-for-19 clear attempts, with LFC successful on 8-of-22 clears.

Senior Mallory Mills (Schaumburg, Ill.-James B. Conant) caused a turnover and junior Prissilla Tucker (Santa Rosa, Calif.-Windsor) scooped up the ball to get Illinois Wesleyan off on a clear. Tucker showed off her speed, flying through the midfield, before dishing off to Fountain. The junior drove towards the near post and drew a free position, which she buried to give IWU a 1-0 lead three and a half minutes in.

Lake Forest scored the next two goals, finding the back of the net twice within a minute, to grab a 2-1 advantage.

After Setzler connected with Fiandaca for a goal, Bajusz stepped in with a shot off a free position to reclaim a one-goal lead, 3-2. The Foresters struck once more to knot the score at three after 15 minutes of play.

Bajusz opened the scoring in the second quarter, firing a free-position shot past the Lake Forest goalie, but once again the Foresters came through with a response.

Cradling the ball behind the net after an initial shot attempt went wide, Fountain hit Setzler on a cut towards goal for a quick-fire shot. The goal came with just under nine minutes on the clock and pushed IWU ahead, 5-4.

After an unsuccessful clear attempt for LFC, the Titans capitalized on the miscue, as DiGiovanni threaded through the Foresters defense and found freshman Maddie Gibson (Fenton, Mo.-Rockwood Summit) for a goal to up the lead to two, 6-4. Lake Forest possessed as time ticked down on the first half, but Illinois Wesleyan's defense stood tall, taking a 6-4 lead into halftime.

The Foresters struck first off the draw control to open the third quarter. The Titan defense once again stood tall, forcing a failed clear to regain possession, setting up a free-position attempt for Fountain. The Orland Park, Ill. native buried the shot to regain a two-goal lead with seven minutes remaining in the third.

After LFC notched a goal to trim the advantage back to one, Illinois Wesleyan responded with two goals to close the third period. Sophomore Chloe Heyl (Houston, Texas-Emery/Weiner) drew a free-position, where she sniped one past the LFC goalie. Newton won the draw control off the goal, and Fountain garnered another free-position, once again burying the shot to give the Green and White a 9-6 cushion going into the final 15 minutes.

Leading 9-6 into the fourth quarter, Illinois Wesleyan stretched its lead to four, 10-6, as DiGiovanni found Fiandaca for a goal with 10:24 to play.

The Foresters made things interesting with goals at the 7:28 and 5:51 marks to pull within two, 10-8, but the Titans never relinquished control. A slick backhanded shot from Setzler one-hopped past the LFC goalie with 55 seconds remaining to put a bow on an 11-8 victory.

Illinois Wesleyan finishes its three-game homestand against University of Wisconsin-La Crosse this Wednesday, March 5. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m. and will serve as the front end of a doubleheader with the IWU men's lacrosse team at Tucci Stadium.
