Women’s Lacrosse Travels to Calvin for Midweek Contest

Titans will play Knights at 4 p.m. ET Wednesday, March 19

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team will hit the road to Grand Rapids, Mich. for a bout with Calvin University Wednesday, March 19. Action is set to begin at 4 p.m. ET on Zuidema Field. 

The Titans (3-3) return to action after falling to McDaniel College, 17-3, Sunday, March 9. Sophomore Chloe Heyl (Houston, Texas-Emery/Weiner) led the team with two points by way of one goal and an assist. Senior Avery Setzler (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) snagged a team-high three draw controls, while freshman Cassie Fischmann (Normal, Ill.-Normal Community) scooped up a team-best two ground balls. Senior Lizzie Rymarcsuk (Lake Zurich, Ill.-Saint Viator) made 10 saves in goal for the Green and White.

Senior Mia Fiandaca (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles North) leads the team with 15 points on 15 goals. Setzler is second with 14 points coming off of 11 goals and three assists. Junior Carleigh Fountain (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg) rounds out the top three scorers with nine goals and four assists for 13 points. Freshman Maddie Gibson (Fenton, Mo.-Rockwood Summit) leads the team with six assists, followed by five from juniors Sadie Newton (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) and Anelise DiGiovanni (Lockport, Ill.-Lockport Township)

Leading the team in ground balls and draw controls is Fiandaca, who has accumulated 30 and 25, respectively. Her average of six ground balls per game ranks fifth in Division III and leads the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin. Setzler is second with 22 ground balls, while Newton sits third with 18. The duo flips to follow Fiandaca in draw controls, as Newton's 22 are good for second and Setzler is third with 10.

Leading the nation in caused turnovers per game with an average of 6.20, Fiandaca leads the team with 31 this season. Newton and freshman Brooke Ayres (Sun Prairie, Wis.-Sun Prairie East) are second with 11 forced miscues apiece. The trio has helped guide the Titan defense to an average of 16 caused turnovers per game, which sits ninth nationally and leads the conference.

Logging 315 minutes in goal, Rymarcsuk has a team-leading 38 saves on a .418 saves percentage, and enters the contest with a goals allowed average of 10.10. Freshman Marli Brown (Kansas City, Mo.-Notre Dame de Sion) has accrued 45 minutes between the pipes, having recorded three saves on a .500 save percentage, holding a 4.00 goals allowed average.

IWU and Calvin (3-2) will meet for the third time, with the Titans having won both prior matchups. Most recently the Green and White defeated the Knights, 14-12, March 20, 2024. Britney Maldonado led the Titans with seven points, as her and Fiandaca tied for the team-lead with four goals apiece. Maldonado also led the team with five caused turnovers, while Fiandaca added four to go along with a team-best four draw controls. In goal for Illinois Wesleyan, then-junior Bri Kiser (Crown Point, Ind.-Crown Point) scooped up a team-high nine ground balls while making 14 saves en route to the win. Calvin enters the contest off a 13-6 win over Southwestern University Wednesday, March 12.
