Women’s Lacrosse Eases Past Edgewood in Home Opener

Titans defeat Eagles, 11-5

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's lacrosse defeated Edgewood College in its first game inside Tucci Stadium of the 2025 season, defeating the Eagles 11-5 Saturday, March 1. With the win, IWU improves to 2-1 on the season, while EC drops to 0-2.

Illinois Wesleyan's offense was led by four points apiece from freshman Maddie Gibson (Fenton, Mo.-Rockwood Summit), junior Carleigh Fountain (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg), and senior Mia Fiandaca (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles East). Fiandaca posted a team-high four goals, while Fountain scored three goals to go along with an assist, and Gibson tallied two goals and two helpers.

Fiandaca also led the team with six draw controls, closely followed by five from junior Sadie Newton (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community). Scooping up nine ground balls, Fiandaca finished one shy of her career-best to guide the Green and White. Senior Avery Setzler (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) followed with a career-high eight ground balls, and freshman Carly Bajusz (Naperville, Ill.-Naperville North) finished with five.

Just three days after breaking the program's single-game caused turnover record, Fiandaca bested her mark of 10 by finishing with 12 forced miscues to lead the defense. Setzler and junior Sarah Riepe (Aurora, Ill.-St. Francis) each finished with four caused turnovers.

Logging all 60 minutes in between the iron, senior Lizzie Rymarcsuk (Lake Zurich, Ill.-Saint Viator) notched her second consecutive win after being credited with three saves and three ground balls.

Fiandaca caused a turnover to give the Green and White possession, which resulted in a Fountain goal. The Orland Park, Ill. native buried a pass from Riepe to break the scoreboard at the 7:27 mark in the first period. Eighty seconds later, Fountain fed Fiandaca for her first goal of the night, making it a 2-0 game with just over six minutes left in the opening quarter.

Edgewood cut the lead in half with a goal to close the opening 15 minutes with a score of 2-1 in favor of the home team.

After the Eagles scored first in the second quarter to level the contest, Fiandaca net back-to-back goals, coming on passes from Riepe and junior Anelise DiGiovanni (Lockport, Ill.-Lockport Township) to push the Titans ahead, 4-2, with 10:54 remaining in the first half. Fountain scored again to close the second quarter of action, as IWU took a 5-2 lead into halftime.

The second half was all Illinois Wesleyan, which came out of the halftime firing. Gibson found Fountain for a goal to spark the third quarter of scoring. The Titans registered all four goals in the 15 minutes, as Gibson scored two, and sophomore Chloe Heyl (Houston, Texas.-Emery/Weiner) closed out the period, 9-2 in favor of IWU.

Illinois Wesleyan coasted in the fourth quarter, securing the 11-5 win.

The Titans remain home, as they host Lake Forest College for a 1 p.m. contest inside Tucci Stadium Sunday, March 2.
