Wrestling Concludes CCIW Championships in Decatur

DECATUR, Ill. — The Illinois Wesleyan University men's wrestling team finished its day at the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Championships Saturday, Feb. 15, with 18.5 points and a 10th-place team finish in Decatur, Ill. 

North Central won the CCIW Championships title with 169 points while Millikin finished second with 122 and MSOE was third with 107 points. 

Senior Bobby Conroy (St. Louis, Mo.-St. Louis University HS) opened the day with a 10-2 major decision over Sean King of Wheaton in the 184-pound bracket. Advancing to the quarterfinals, Conroy came away with a narrow 5-3 decision win over Devin Rogers of Carthage. The senior slipped up in the semifinals, as he trailed 4-0 heading into the third period. Alton Mullinax of Aurora ultimately took the match in a 8-0 major as Conroy dropped into the consolation bracket. 

Facing a familiar face from earlier in the day, Conroy met King from Wheaton in the consolation semifinals where Conroy battled for  a 4-2 decision win, finding himself in the third-place match for the second-straight year. Conroy took an early 3-0 lead in the third place match but MOE's Gavin Graham battled back for the 18-6 major decision as Conroy finished the day in fourth place at 184 pounds. 

After falling in his first match, sophomore Austin Johnston (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) battled back in his first match of the 141 pound consolation bracket. The sophomore defeated Khadyn Jacobs of Augustana on a 20-0 tech fall but was pinned in the consolation semifinals by Cole Nelson of Carthage. Johnston concluded his day with a 7-5 decision over Max Sanderfoot of MSOE to finish fifth in the 141 pound weight class.

Freshman Ameer Alamawi (New Lenox, Ill.-Lincoln-Way Central) was named IWU's CCIW RESPECT Award recipient.
