Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Hoops Overpowers Wisconsin Lutheran

Fourteen Titans score in the win

ALBION, Mich. - The 16th-ranked Illinois Wesleyan University men's basketball team continued its strong start to the season with a 97-42 win over Wisconsin Lutheran College on day one of the Coach Mike Turner College Classic hosted by Albion College Friday evening, Nov. 21. IWU jumped to 4-0 with the win, while WLC dove to 0-4.

In a game that saw 17 Titans log minutes, 14 different players scored for Illinois Wesleyan. Junior Casen Lawrence (St. Louis, Mo.-Westminster Christian) went for 15 points with three made three-pointers, while senior Karlo Colak (Glencoe, Ill- New Trier) added 12 points. Sophomore Noah Cleveland (Normal, Ill.-Normal Community) tallied nine points and tied junior Mason Funk (Normal, Ill.-University High) for the team lead with seven rebounds.

The Green and White posted a field goal percentage of 50.0 percent (36-of-72) with a season-high 14 three-point makes. IWU converted 11-of-18 free throw attempts. Illinois Wesleyan's defense stymied the Warriors as WLC knocked down just 22.4 percent of its shots (15-of-67). Wisconsin Lutheran was 3-for-25 from distance and 9-for-17 at the line.

Illinois Wesleyan's dominance saw the Titans accrue leads in bench scoring (47-18), points in the paint (42-18), fastbreak scoring (14-5), and second-chance points (21-12). IWU pulled in 59 rebounds to WLC's 36, with 17 offensive boards.

Five points from Lawrence put Illinois Wesleyan in front from the opening tip as the Green and White never trailed in the contest. A putback by WLC cut the advantage to three, 11-8, but Lawrence kicked to junior Brady Ruggles (Wheaton, Ill.-Danville) for a trey. Moments later, Lawrence was on the receiving end of a dime from sophomore Josh Fridman (Northbrook, Ill.-Glenbrook North) for a three-ball of his own to put the Titans in front, 17-10, at the 13:16 mark.

Sophomore Anthony Kemp (Bourbonnais, Ill.-Bradley Bourbonnais) tipped in an offensive board and senior Brady Kuehl (St. Louis, Mo.-Parkway West) and Lawrence followed with back-to-back layups to extend the lead to double-digits. A 15-5 run ended with a layup by senior Jackson Niego (Western Springs, Ill.-Lyons Township) as IWU carried a 44-25 lead into the break.

Senior Nick Tingley (New Lenox, Ill.-Lincoln-Way Central) came up with the highlight play of the second half, taking a pass in transition from junior Dylan Schmidt (Johnsburg, Ill.-Johnsburg) and throwing down a dunk over a WLC player. The slam was part of a career-high eight-point showing from Tingley, who connected on all three of his shots from the field and 2-of-3 free throws.

In all, the second half saw buckets by Tingley, senior David Williams (Peoria, Ill.-Peoria Notre Dame), freshman Luke Meyer (Highland, Utah-Juan Diego Catholic), sophomore Connor Williams (Palos Park, Ill.-Stagg), and freshman Micah Meiss (Gridley, Ill.-El Paso Gridley).

Illinois Wesleyan will complete the weekend tournament tomorrow, Nov. 22, against the winner of tonight's game between Albion and Kenyon College.
