Women’s Soccer Prepares for Final Home Game of the Year

Titans go for third consecutive win

BLOOMINGTON, Ill.- The Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team wraps up its four-game homestand Wednesday, Oct. 22, at 7 p.m. against North Central College at Neis Field. IWU comes into the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin test winning its last two matches for a 7-6-2 (2-2-1 CCIW) record. 

After a crucial, 3-1, win over Elmhurst University Saturday, Oct. 18 the Titans rose to fifth-place in the conference standings with seven points. In the win, Illinois Wesleyan featured a pair of goal scorers in junior Sophie Lampert (Hudson, Ill.-Normal West) and sophomore winger Taylor Haun (Metamora, Ill.-Metamora Township). Lampert knocked in the match's first goal on beautiful passing by sophomore Liza Wiley (Bloomington, Ind.-Home School) and junior Ava Mapes (Golden, Colo.-Lakewood). Mapes was active on the second goal assisting Haun's goal in the 53rd minute to push IWU to a 2-nil lead.

Adding an assist on Saturday, Wiley's six goals and six assists leads the team with 18 points. Mapes has continued her strong play throughout league play to sit with 11 points on four goals and three assists. Sophomore goalkeeper Vanessa Gray (Burlington, Ontario, Canada-Dr. Frank J. Hayden) sits fourth in the CCIW in total saves with 60. 

With CCIW play winding down, Wiley and senior Kayley Carew (Peoria, Ill.-Peoria Notre Dame) crack the top-five for assists in league play. Wiley sits in third with her six helpers, with Carew lurking in fifth with five. 

North Central is battling out first place in the CCIW with North Park as both teams are 5-0-0 accumulating 15 points. Overall, NCC is 10-5 and is riding a six-game win streak. The Cardinals have dominated league opponents through five games, allowing just two goals compared to its own 19 scored. Last time out, Saturday, Oct. 18 North Central blanked Carthage en route to a 4-nil win. Junior Jordan Lange anchors the offensive attack for NCC with a league-leading 23 points. She has tallied eight goals and seven assists starting all 15 games for the Cardinals. In net, NCC leans on sophomore goalkeeper Lily Mattison who sits second in the conference with six shutouts, and is first in goalie minutes. Mattison has a 1.01 goals against average to go along with a .746 save percentage. 

In the history of the matchup, IWU enjoys a 27-6-1 lead against NCC, but has seen the Cardinals win four of the last five matches. In the last two years, NCC has put up 12 goals, six in each match, while shutting out the Titans in both contests. The last Illinois Wesleyan win came in the 2022 CCIW Tournament when IWU pulled out a 4-1 win in the Championship to advance to the NCAA Tournament.
