BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Following a two-year stint as a graduate assistant for the Illinois Wesleyan University athletic communications department, Meredith Mahoney has been named Assistant Director of Athletic Communications. The position, which also includes assisting with NCAA and College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin events, is primarily funded through the NCAA Division III Ethnic Minorities and Women Internship grant. Mahoney begins her new role Aug. 1.
"Meredith has been a tremendous part of our team over the past two years and I am thrilled that she is remaining at IWU in this new capacity," Katie Gonzales, Assistant AD for Athletic Communications added. "She is incredibly passionate about providing the best student-athlete experience we can. Meredith's growth over the past two years has been incredible. I am excited to see her continue to build on the things she has accomplished as a graduate assistant."
In her new role, Mahoney rounds out the IWU staff that includes Gonzales, Assistant Director of Athletic Communications Taiah Gallisath, Live Stream Coordinator Tyler Wilson, and second-year Graduate Assistant Kelly Carlson.
Over the past two years, Mahoney has been pivotal in the promotion and publicity efforts of Titan athletics. She has served as the primary contact for men's and women's volleyball, men's and women's tennis, and women's lacrosse. The Downers Grove, Ill. native's efforts led to Taylor French being named the AVCA Division III Player of the Week, the first student-athlete in program history to receive the honor. She also led the publicity of Britney Maldonado's record-breaking season that saw her named IWLCA Co-Offensive Player of the Week and the NCAA statistical national champion for assists per game.Â
Mahoney and the rest of the IWU athletic communications team was nominated by peers for the D3SIDA Region 4 Communicator(s) of the Year award just last week.Â
An active member of College Sports Communicators, Mahoney is a member of the Academic All-America committee and serves as Vice Chair of the Young Professionals committee.Â
Illinois Wesleyan is slated to host the 2025 NCAA Division III Softball National Championship this spring as well as the 2025 NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball National Championship, two events Mahoney will be heavily involved in.Â
Mahoney came to IWU by way of Central College, where she was a three-year student worker in the Sports Information Department under CSC Hall of Famer Larry Happel. A four-year member of the Dutch softball team, Mahoney was also involved in the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. She graduated from Central with a bachelor's degree in actuarial science in May of 2022.Â
