Men’s Tennis Drops Windy Battle to No. 24 North Central

Titans travel to Augie Saturday, April 13

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - On a windy afternoon at Evergreen Racquet Club, the Illinois Wesleyan University men's tennis team could not use Mother Nature to its advantage, falling 9-0 to the 24th-ranked North Central College Cardinals Friday, April 12. With the loss, IWU slides to 9-5 overall, picking up its first loss in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin action to drop to 2-1 in league play. After defeating Millikin University this morning, NCC upped its resume to 18-3 and stayed perfect in CCIW action, improving to 4-0.

Opening the day with doubles action, the Titans stayed competitive in paired play to begin. At No. 1 doubles, sophomore Ian Turnbull (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) and senior Ryan McCoy (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Rolling Meadows) pushed their match to a tiebreaker, but couldn't pull off the upset, falling 8-7(4) to the top Cardinals pair. Sophomore Ben Vigneri (Casper, Wyo.-Phillips Exeter Academy) and junior Zeke Cross (Springfield, Ill.-Springfield) battled at No. 2 doubles, but fell 8-4. Playing at No. 3 doubles, freshman Thad Dillow (Effingham, Ill.-Effingham) and sophomore Griffin Hammond (Metamora, Ill.-Metamora Township) dropped their paired match, 8-5.

Turnbull and McCoy continued their fights in singles action, as both players pushed their NCC opponent to some extra tennis in a set. Playing in the top singles spot, Turnbull pushed his first set nearly to a tiebreaker, but fell short, 7-5, and dropped his second set, 6-2. Nearly opposite of his doubles partner, McCoy fell in his first set at No. 3 singles, 6-3, before making a push in his second set, dropping it 7-5.

Illinois Wesleyan has a quick turnaround, as the Titans travel to Rock Island, Ill., to face Augustana College Saturday, April 13. First serve is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the brand new Lincoln Park.
