Seven Titans Secure ITA Scholar Athlete Honors, Men’s Tennis Named All-Academic Team

Illinois Wesleyan was one of five CCIW institutions recognized

TEMPE, Ariz. - Seven Titans earned Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar Athlete Honors, announced by the organization, Wednesday, July 15. Illinois Wesleyan University men's tennis was also named an all-academic team. This is the fifth straight season that five-or-more Titans have been recognized as scholar athletes and the seventh straight campaign that the squad was named an all-academic team. 

Seniors Ben Vigneri (Casper, Wyo.-Phillip Exeter), Ian Turnbull (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington), Griffin Hammond (Metamora, Ill.-Metamora), and Sebastian Rasquin (Park Ridge, Ill.-Maine South), juniors Thad Dillow (Effingham, Ill.-Effingham) and Chase Tomecki (Downers Grove, Ill.-Downers Grove South), and freshman Will Ehrlich (Springfield, Ill.-Glenwood) captured scholar athlete status. 

In order to earn the Scholar-Athlete Award, one must have a GPA of at least 3.5 for the current academic year. For a team to earn All-Academic status, the program must have a team GPA of at least 3.2. 

On the court, the Titans raced out to their best start since 2010-11, winning the first five matches of the spring campaign. In total, the team earned three College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Player of the Week awards. Vigneri also claimed his first All-CCIW honor. 

Three Titans earned College Sports Communicators Academic All-District honors to go along with four Dave Wrath Academic All-CCIW recognitions. 

The Titans were one of 147 programs to receive the award and one of five CCIW institutions alongside Carroll, Carthage, North Central, and Wheaton.
