Women’s Lacrosse Falls at UW-River Falls

Titans travel to Lake Forest Wednesday, April 3

RIVER FALLS, Wis. - A slow start proved costly as the Illinois Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team suffered a 17-11 loss at University of Wisconsin-River Falls Saturday afternoon, March 30. IWU's record slipped to 5-4 with the setback, while UWRF jumped to 5-3.

The Falcons scored the game's first five goals before the Titans rattled off five straight in the second period to level the score. Senior Britney Maldonado (Hoffman Estates, Ill.-James B. Conant) found sophomore Sarah Riepe (Aurora, Ill.-St. Francis) for a goal with 13:27 on the clock to begin the run. Sophomore Anelise DiGiovanni (Lockport, Ill.-Lockport Township) followed with back-to-back scores before sophomore Carleigh Fountain (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg) found junior Mia Fiandaca (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles North) for a goal to pull IWU within one, 5-4, with around nine minutes left in the half.

Junior Avery Setzler (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) capped off the run with an unassisted strike, but UW-River Falls scored twice to reclaim the lead, 7-5. With less than three minutes remaining in the opening half, sophomore Devon Hanson (Waukesha, Wis.-Waukesha West) and Maldonado each scored to knot the score at seven, but UWRF once again answered. This time, the Falcons found the back of the net twice in less than a minute to take a 9-7 edge into the break.

Illinois Wesleyan cut back within one thanks to back-to-back goals in the third period. After UW-River Falls had boosted its lead to three, Maldonado scored one on her own before setting up Setzler for a strike to trim the deficit to one, 10-9.

The Falcons used a string of five unanswered goals to take control, 15-9, as the Titans' comeback ultimately fell short, 17-11.

Maldonado was the team leader with five points on three goals and two helpers, while DiGiovanni, Fiandaca, and Setzler each notched two goals.

Hanson and sophomore Sadie Newton (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) led IWU with two caused turnovers apiece. Setzler added a team-high four ground balls and four draw controls. Junior Bri Kiser (Crown Point, Ind.-Crown Point) recorded 15 saves in goal.

Illinois Wesleyan continues its three-game roadtrip with a stop at Lake Forest College Wednesday, April 3. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m.
