NAPERVILLE, Ill. - Sophomore Ian Turnbull (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) of the Illinois Wesleyan University men's tennis team was named a co-recipient of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Player of the Week honors, announced by the league's office Tuesday, Feb. 20. Turnbull shares the honor with North Central College's Ramon Vilarroig.
A Second Team All-CCIW selection for the 2022-23 season, the sophomore earns his first weekly award from the conference. Turnbull becomes the fifth player under head coach Sam Totten to receive the accolade, as he joins his brother Evan Turnbull (March 22, 2023), Ryan McCoy (Feb. 22, 2023), Justin Piotrowski (March 17, 2021), and Demetrios Triantafel (Feb. 27, 2019).
Turnbull has been IWU's No. 1 player since his arrival on campus, and he helped guide the Titans to two big wins Saturday, Feb. 17, as he accumulated four victories over two matches for the day.
Opening the day against Monmouth College, Turnbull picked up a win at No. 1 doubles with set scores of 6-1, 6-0. He then paired up with senior Ryan McCoy (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Rolling Meadows) at No. 1 doubles, winning 8-1, as the Green and White rolled to a 9-0 victory.
Turnbull was clutch in the 5-4 victory over Principia College to close out the day, helping the Titans secure the program's first win over the Panthers. The Bloomington, Ill. native came out on top at No. 1 singles. After dropping the first set, 6-4, he evened the match with a 6-0 second set win, and took the tiebreaker, 10-6, to secure the victory. Turnbull continued his stellar weekend at No. 1 doubles action, as he and McCoy won with a score of 6-4.
