Women’s Volleyball Falls at No. 21 Chicago

Pierce records 1000th career assist

CHICAGO - Taking on its second straight nationally-ranked opponent, the Illinois Wesleyan University women's volleyball team stumbled on the road at No. 21 University of Chicago Wednesday night, Nov. 6. IWU (19-8) fell to UC (21-9) by set scores of 25-20, 25-22, and 25-10.

Junior Taylor French (Romeoville, Ill.-Plainfield East) led the Titans with a match-high 14 kills on a .226 attacking percentage. She completed a double-double with 10 digs, finishing second on the team to junior Kannyn Boyd's (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.-Mt. Pleasant) 11. Fifth-year Jordan Pierce (Bonfield, Ill.Herscher), who notched her 1000th career assist in the match, finished with a team-high 11 assists. Sophomore Sophia Feeney (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) added nine assists and six digs.

Illinois Wesleyan struggled to find consistency on the attacking end, finishing the match with a .000 clip to Chicago's .141 in the setback. The Green and White held a 43-38 lead in digs, but the Maroons notched advantages in blocks (12-5) and aces (10-1).

A kill from freshman Alex Bardouniotis (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles North) gave the Titans a 9-7 lead in the first set before Chicago rallied back to level the score 10 all. French broke the run with a back row kill, and Bardouniotis hammered a set from Pierce to kick off an IWU run. After a Chicago miscue, Pierce set sophomore Cailin Shannon (Bloomingdale, Ill.-Lake Park) for a kill to register the 1000th helper of her career to jump the Titan lead to three, 14-11.

The Maroons stole momentum from there, scoring six of the next eight points to jump ahead, 17-16, for their first lead of the night. Illinois Wesleyan stayed within striking distance on a French kill and a block by Bardouniotis and junior Hannah Tellor (Metamora, Ill.-Metamora Township), but ultimately fell, 25-20.

The second set saw Chicago grab a 16-12 advantage into an IWU timeout. Moments after the reset, a Palmer kill was followed by a trio of points by French to pull the Green and White within one, 19-18. Shannon and Tellor knotted the score at 19 all with a rejection and an ace by Boyd pushed IWU up, 21-19, into a UC timeout.

Chicago responded with three straight points to reclaim a 22-21 edge as Illinois Wesleyan burned its second timeout. Despite a French kill off the set by Pierce tying the match at 22, the Maroons rattled off the next three points to win the set, 25-22.

Illinois Wesleyan fell behind in the early goings of the third and was never able to catch up, as the Titans fell, 25-10, to finish the match in straight sets.

The Titans return to the Shirk Center this Saturday, Nov. 9, as host to the IWU Triangular. The last of IWU's three home tournaments will feature matches against Centre College and Wisconsin Lutheran College. The Green and White takes on Centre at 9 a.m. before battling WLC at 1 p.m. in a Senior Day showdown. Illinois Wesleyan will recognize its senior class prior to first serve against Wisconsin Lutheran.
