Women’s Volleyball Secures 20th Win on Senior Day

Titans split in regular season finale

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Playing its final matches of the 2024 regular season, the Illinois Wesleyan University women's volleyball team split its two matches Saturday, Nov. 9, falling in four sets to Centre College (25-19, 25-23, 16-25, 25-20) before sweeping Wisconsin Lutheran College with set scores of 25-16, 25-17, 25-23. The win over Wisconsin Lutheran (10-17) marked the 20th of the season for the Titans, who improved to 20-9 overall. It marks the 15th time the Titans have hit the 20-win mark under head coach Kim Nelson-Brown, and the first since 2018. 

Prior to the WLC match, Illinois Wesleyan celebrated Senior Day, honoring seniors Abby Erdman (Aurora, Ill.-Metea Valley), Carly Kuehl (St. Louis, Mo.-Parkway West), Morgan Harrington (Plainfield, Ill.-Plainfield East), Jessie Sariev (Schaumburg, Ill.-Schaumburg), and fifth-year Jordan Pierce (Bonfield, Ill.-Herscher). The group has accomplished two College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Regular Season Championships (2021 & 2024), a CCIW Tournament Championship (2021), and made the NCAA Tournament in 2021.

Opening the tournament with a defensive battle, Illinois Wesleyan came up short in the four-set battle against the Colonels (20-5), finishing with set scores of 25-19, 25-23, 16-25, and 25-20. While the Titans held the advantage in digs (65-61), IWU was outnumbered in kills (52-46), hitting .173 to Centre's .197 clip, assists (48-42), aces (7-5), and blocks (7-6). 

Junior Taylor French (Romeoville, Ill.-Plainfield East) led the match with 16 kills along with a team-high three aces, and added 12 digs to complete the double-double performance. Freshman Alex Bardouniotis (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles North) tied French for the team-lead in digs with a dozen, and added a pair of aces. Junior Hannah Tellor (Metamora, Ill.-Metamora Township) was second on the squad with 11 kills, doing so on a .474 clip. Sophomore Eleanor Palmer (Chicago, Ill.-DePaul College Prep) rounded out the top-three hitters with six kills. 

The Titans saw the duo of sophomore Sophia Feeney (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) and Erdman orchestrate the majority of the offense, finishing with 22 and 18 assists, respectively. Erdman added 11 digs to notch her fourth double-double of the season. Tellor led the Green and White net defense with five blocks. Sophomore Cailin Shannon (Bloomingdale, Ill.-Lake Park) was second with three stuffs, and Palmer posted a pair, one coming on a solo rejection.

After recognizing its seniors, all five appeared in the sweep of the Warriors to conclude the regular season for the Green and White. The match saw 10 Titans record a kill in the contest, powered by Pierce and French with 10 apiece. Pierce's career-high in kills was powered by a .533 attack percentage. Palmer finished third on the team with six kills, hitting .545 in the contest. 

The duo of Erdman and Feeney split setting duties for the majority of the match. Erdman led with a match-high 23 assists, while Feeney posted 11. Boyd led the defense with 23 digs, followed by Bardouniotis with 10, and Erdman with nine. Palmer posted a team-high four blocks, while Bardouniotis and Pierce each tallied three. 

Illinois Wesleyan finished the match with 42 kills on a .320 attack percentage and limited WLC to 28 kills on a .093 clip. The Titans held the upperhand in digs (56-41), assists (39-26), and blocks (6-3), while each team finished with eight aces. 

The Titans look ahead to the CCIW Tournament, serving as the No. 1 seed after securing the CCIW Regular Season Championship with a perfect, 8-0, record. Illinois Wesleyan will host the CCIW Semifinal inside Shirk Center Thursday, Nov. 14, and will face the winner of fourth-seed North Central and fifth-seed North Park, which will play Tuesday night, Nov. 12. Action is set to begin Thursday at 7 p.m.
