Women’s Volleyball Downed by No. 8 WashU

Titans turn attention to 18th-ranked Chicago

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Taking on tough competition inside Shirk Center, the Illinois Wesleyan University women's volleyball team fell in four sets to eighth-ranked Washington University in St. Louis Thursday night, Oct. 31, with set scores of 25-20, 21-25, 25-11, and 25-19. The loss dips the Titans to 19-7, while WashU improves to 24-4.

The Green and White were outnumbered by the Bears in kills (53-40) while being stifled to a .081 clip, compared to WashU's .293 attack percentage. The Titans also lost the battle in assists (48-40), digs (69-60), and blocks (9-2), but held the advantage in aces, 7-6.

Sophomore Cailin Shannon (Bloomingdale, Ill.-Lake Park) led the offense with a career-high 13 kills, doing so on a .375 attack percentage. Junior Taylor French (Romeoville, Ill.-Plainfield East) was second with 12 kills, while freshman Alex Bardouniotis (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles North) added nine. The trio of French, Bardouniotis, and sophomore Sophia Feeney (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) finished with a pair of aces. Feeney totaled a team-high 22 assists, followed by fifth-year Jordan Pierce's (Bonfield, Ill.-Herscher) 10.

The Titan defense saw junior Kannyn Boyd (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.-Mt. Pleasant) lead the team in digs with 18, while French added 12 to complete her 17th double-double performance of the season. Feeney and Pierce each added eight. Junior Hannah Tellor (Metamora, Ill.-Metamora Township) totaled two blocks, one by way of a solo stuff.

The first set saw the Titans come out and take six of the first eight points. Feeney fed Bardouniotis to open the match with a kill, and Tellor followed with the solo rejection. Two straight WashU attack errors saw the Green and White lead early, 4-0. After two points for the visitors, Bardouniotis and Tellor teamed up for a block, and a bad set saw the score stand at 6-2.

WashU rattled off five straight to even the set score at 10 apiece, and saw its first lead of the night when the Bears went up 13-12. Shannon evened the set at 13, downing a dish from Feeney, and Bardouniotis followed with an ace, before a WashU miscue put the Green and White back out in front, 15-13. The Bears offense kicked in late, as WashU took five of the last six points of the set to take the opener, 25-20.

After a set one intermission saw the IWU softball team win its fourth straight costume contest, narrowly defeating the women's basketball squad, the Titans found a groove in the second. Feeney found Shannon to open the set with a kill, and Bardouniotis followed with an ace. WashU evened the set at two, but a Tellor kill followed by an attack error upped IWU's lead back to two, 4-2. A long rally ended on a French kill to spark a three-point run for the home team, as the junior sandwiched another Bears miscue with two of her 12 kills on the night, putting the Green and White up, 7-3.

The Titans continued to cruise in the set until a late WashU run brought the score within three, 20-17, but three straight assists from Boyd helped Illinois Wesleyan late, as the libero found Bardouniotis for two kills, and Shannon in between, pushing the score to 23-17. A service error saw set point cued up for the Titans, and Shannon buried a set from Feeney to even the match at one set apiece with a final score of 25-21.

Illinois Wesleyan could not find its groove after, dropping the next two sets, 25-11 and 25-19.

The Titans will take the weekend off, returning to action Wednesday night, Nov. 6. IWU heads to No. 18 University of Chicago for a 7 p.m. match inside Ratner Athletic Center.
