Women’s Volleyball Splits IWU Triangular

Titans swept Illinois College before falling to No. 2 Hope

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's volleyball team split its matches at the IWU Triangular Saturday, Sept. 23. The Titans (5-8) opened the tournament with a sweep over Illinois College (25-10, 25-15, 25-12), but dropped its match to No. 2 Hope College in the nightcap, falling in straight sets (25-14, 25-23, 25-21).

Illinois Wesleyan 3, Illinois College 0
The Titans opened the tournament strong, hitting .287 for the match, while limiting IC to a .053 clip. Illinois Wesleyan held advantages in kills (39-19), digs (50-34), assists (34-17), and had all 12 aces in the match.

IWU saw a balanced attack, as junior Carly Kuehl (St. Louis, Mo.-Parkway West) led the offense with 10 kills on a monstrous .643 attack percentage. Sophomore Taylor French (Romeoville, Ill.-Plainfield East) added nine kills, while junior Morgan Harrington (Plainfield, Ill.-Plainfield East) finished with seven on a .417 clip. Freshman Sophia Feeney (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) and junior Abby Erdman (Aurora, Ill.-Metea Valley) were the masterminds behind most of the offense, finishing with 17 and nine assists, respectively.

Of the 12 aces in the match, French finished with five, one off her career-high. Freshman Cailin Shannon (Bloomingdale, Ill.-Lake Park) notched her first collegiate ace, and finished the match with three.

On the defensive side, French and Feeney finished with double-double performances, as each recorded 10 digs in the match. Senior Faith Washko (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart-Griffin) and sophomore Raegan Watts (Forsyth, Ill.-Maroa Forsyth) each added eight digs, as Watts tied her career-best performance. Harrington and senior Taylor Babec (Joliet, Ill.-Plainfield Central) each finished with a match-high three total blocks, while Kuehl added two assisted rejections.

Illinois Wesleyan cracked open the triangular strong, taking the first four points, courtesy of a solo Harrington block, paired block from Harrington and Babec, a Babec kill, and an IC miscue. The Lady Blues fought back, taking the next two points. Babec put the Titans back on track with a kill, followed by an IC error, and French's first ace of the contest, pushing the score to 7-2.

After trading points, IWU got back on a roll via back-to-back Shannon kills. Up 13-8, the Green and White went on a 12-2 run to close out the first set, 25-10.

Following an ace to close out the first set, French opened the second set with a kill. IC took the next two points, and the two teams went back-and-forth until a Lady Blues service error spiked the beginning of a 5-1 run for the Green and White, putting the home team up, 9-5. Illinois College came back with two straight kills, but Harrington answered with one of her own to push the lead to three, 10-7.

IC got a sideout on a Titan miscue, but French opened a 10-1 run with a kill. Harrington followed with a kill, followed by another French ace, and Keuhl recorded two kills and assisted on a block with Babec to up the score to 20-9. The Lady Blues battled back, capitalizing on three Titan mistakes, but IWU closed out the match, taking four of the last five points for a final score of 25-15.

Similar to the second set, French opened the third with a kill, and Feeney followed with an ace to jumpstart the set, as IWU opened on a 9-1 run. Illinois Wesleyan commanded the entire set, as freshman Mallory Monahan (Champaign, Ill.-Saint Thomas More) made her collegiate debut, closing the match with her first career kill to secure the victory, 25-12.

Illinois Wesleyan 0, Hope 3
In the final match of the triangular, the Titans were overpowered by Hope, who have yet to lose this season, moving to 12-0. IWU was held to a .131 attack percentage, while the Flying Dutch finished with a .262 clip. Hope held advantages in kills (43-37), assists (40-35), aces (7-5), and blocks (7-3), but the Green and White held the upperhand in digs, finishing with 63 to Hope's 61.

Kuehl and Harrington led the offense with nine kills apiece, hitting .333 and .304, respectively, while Shannon added five. Feeney and Erdman led IWU in assists, finishing with 15 and 12, respectively.

Washko recorded two of the team's five aces, and finished short of a double-double performance with eight assists, as she led the defense with 18 digs. French was second with 14 digs, while Feeney added eight. At the net, Babec and Shannon each posted two assisted blocks.

Illinois Wesleyan stays home, as the Titans host Augustana College Wednesday, Sept. 27, for a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin midweek match. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. inside Shirk Center.
