Women’s Volleyball Takes Five-Set Thriller Over Augie

Pierce puts together near triple-double performance

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's volleyball team held off a comeback by Augustana College Wednesday night, Sept. 27, inside the Shirk Center. The Titans (6-8, 2-1 CCIW) claimed the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin clash in five sets as they defeated the Vikings (10-4, 1-2 CCIW) 25-21, 25-15, 12-25, 22-25, 17-15 in thrilling fashion.

Making her season debut, senior Jordan Pierce (Bonfield, Ill.-Herscher) demolished her career-highs with a near triple-double of 44 assists, 12 digs, and nine kills on a .333 clip. Pierce, who nearly doubled her previous career-best of 26 helpers, also tallied two aces and a block.

Sophomore Taylor French (Romeoville, Ill.-Plainfield East) collected a match-high 24 kills on 70 attempts to go along with 13 digs as she recorded her seventh double-double of the season. Senior Faith Washko (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart-Griffin) tallied a team-best 28 digs, with freshman Sophia Feeney (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) adding 11.

Juniors Morgan Harrington (Plainfield, Ill.-Plainfield East) and Carly Kuehl (St. Louis, Mo.-Parkway West) added 10 and nine kills, respectively. Freshman Eleanor Palmer (Chicago, Ill.-DePaul College Prep) finished with seven kills, four blocks and a dig.

A balanced attack powered the Titans to a 25-21 win in the opening set, as French led the way with five kills. Harrington added four put downs, while Pierce kept the Augie defense off-balance with four kills and nine assists. The turning point of the set came with the score tied at 14-all as IWU rattled off a four-point run. Three kills by Kuehl and one from French pushed the Green and White ahead, 18-14, as the Titans moved to 1-0 in the match.

The Green and White dominated the second set, using a .238 attacking percentage and four aces to topple the Vikings, 25-15. IWU's defense limited Augie to a .061 clip for the set to charge ahead, 2-0.

Augustana flipped the script on Illinois Wesleyan in the third, taking control early and never looking back to extend the match.

In the fourth, the Titans used four straight kills from French to erase a three-point deficit and stake an 18-16 lead. The Vikings closed the gap though, tying the score at 20-20 and forcing an IWU timeout. Augie maintained momentum out of the break with back-to-back points as the visitors took the set, 25-22.

Errors got the best of the Titans in the fifth, but senior Lily Summers (Plainfield, Ill.-Plainfield North) provided a much-needed spark off the bench to help the Green and White thwart the Vikings comeback attempt. Facing match point, Summers slammed down back-to-back kills to knot the match at 14. After Augie pushed to match point once again, IWU rattled off three straight points to take the set. A kill from Palmer kick-started the run before an AC error. Palmer and Pierce then teamed up for a rejection to give IWU the set, 17-15, and the match, 3-2.

Illinois Wesleyan will enjoy the weekend off before returning to conference play at North Central College Tuesday, Oct. 3. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Gregory Arena.
