Women’s Volleyball Knocks Off Knights

Titans win third straight match

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's volleyball team needed just 85 minutes to take down the Knights of Wartburg College Friday night, Sept. 15, to open the Sandy Schumacher Memorial Tournament, hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. The Titans improve to 3-5, while Wartburg drops to 3-7.

Illinois Wesleyan dominated the match, holding advantages in kills (47-27), assists (46-25), digs (54-45), total blocks (8-4), and aces (5-2), while hitting .294 as a team, and holding the Knights to a .113 attack percentage.

Offensively, the Titans saw sophomore Taylor French (Romeoville, Ill.-Plainfield East) led the match with 18 kills on a .455 attack percentage. Senior Lily Summers (Plainfield, Ill.-Plainfield North) finished with 10 kills, hitting double-digits for the fifth time in her career. Freshman Cailin Shannon (Bloomingdale, Ill.-Lake Park) rounded out the top-three with six kills. IWU saw three Titans orchestrate the majority of the offense, as freshman Sophia Feeney (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) accumulated 22 assists, while sophomore Katie Gund (Pewaukee, Wis.-Pewaukee) and senior Faith Washko (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred-Heart Griffin) finished with 10. Sophomore Raegan Watts (Forsyth, Ill.-Maroa Forsyth) recorded three of the team's five aces.

On the defensive side, Washko led the match with 18 digs, picking up her first career double-double performance to pair with her career-high 10 assists. Gund also notched a double-double, posting a career-best 11 digs.

The Titans saw a heavy net defense, as five different players recorded at least one block. Freshman Eleanor Palmer (Chicago, Ill.-DePaul College Prep) led the pack with four total blocks, while French and junior Morgan Harrington (Plainfield, Ill.-Plainfield East) each notched three. French recorded both of the team's solo rejections.

Wartburg took the first four points of the match, but French put the Titans on the board, registering the first point for the Green and White, and beginning a four-point run to tie things up. The match stayed close, until back-to-back French kills and a Knights miscue put IWU out front, 15-12. Soon after, Summers hammered down two straight points, and Harrington put the set away with the final kill.

Set two started with the Titans on a 4-1 run, courtesy of a Feeney ace and kills from French, Palmer, and Summers.Wartburg battled back, but the Green and White found its stride shortly after, cruising to a 13-6 advantage. The Titans kept on the gas, taking the set, 25-15, propelled by a .344 attack percentage for the set.

Palmer opened the final set with a kill, beginning a dominant, 16-6, run for the Green and White. The Knights mounted a comeback, bringing the score to within four, but four French kills, and Wartburg error secured IWU's win.

Illinois Wesleyan returns to the court tomorrow, Sept. 16, for its final two matches of the tournament. The Titans take on Buena Vista University at 10 a.m. followed by a 2 p.m. match against Hamline University.
