Women’s Volleyball Splits Final Day in Eau Claire

Titans return home to face Carthage Wednesday night, Sept. 20

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's volleyball team finished the Sandy Schumacher Memorial Tournament, hosted by University of Wisconsin Eau-Claire, with a split Saturday, Sept. 16. The Titans (4-6) fell to Buena Vista University in four sets (25-22, 22-25, 25-20, 25-19), before finishing the match with a four-set victory over Hamline University (25-19, 25-19, 23-25, 25-11).

The Titans could not overcome a slow start, dropping the opening set before evening the match in the second. But Buena Vista (5-6) overpowered the Green and White in the final two sets to walk away with the win. 

As a team, IWU had slim advantages in kills (46-45), assists (41-40), and finished with 15 blocks to the Beavers nine. BV nudged out the Titans in digs (65-63), and aces (7-5), while hitting .151 for the match, compared to IWU's .078.

Individually, sophomore Taylor French (Romeoville, Ill.-Plainfield East) led the match with 19 kills, while senior Lily Summers (Plainfield, Ill.-Plainfield North) finished one off a career-best performance with 11. Senior Taylor Babec (Joliet, Ill.-Plainfield Central) rounded out the top-three attack with eight. Freshman Sophia Feeney (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) led the Green and White with 18 assists and three of the team's five aces. Sophomore Katie Gund (Pewaukee, Wis.-Pewaukee) added 11 assists as the team's second setter. 

The Titan defense saw a strong net presence from Babec, finishing with six total blocks, three of which were solo rejections. Both freshman Eleanor Palmer (Chicago, Ill.-DePaul College Prep) and Summers tied career-highs, finishing with five and three blocks, respectively. Senior Faith Washko (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred-Heart Griffin) led the team in digs with 18, while French followed with eight, and Feeney totaled seven.

The Titans closed out the tournament strong, taking down Hamline (2-5) in four sets. IWU took the first two sets of the contest, but the Pipers disrupted the sweep, taking the third. Illinois Wesleyan made quick work in the fourth, hitting .516 for the set to secure the victory. 

The final match of the tournament saw a dominant Titan offense. IWU hit .311 as a team, while holding HU to a .135 attack percentage. The Green and White saw advantages in kills (64-40), assists (62-35), and digs (78-6), while each team recorded eight aces and five total blocks. 

Similar to the morning, French led the match, finishing with 20 kills and two aces. Junior Carly Kuehl (St. Louis, Mo.-Parkway West) tied a career-best 11 kills, while Summers once again came up just short of her career-high, also finishing with 11. Sophomore Raegan Watts (Forsyth, Ill.-Maroa Forsyth) and Washko each notched a pair of aces for the Green and White. 

Junior Abby Erdman (Aurora, Ill.-Metea Valley) and Feeney orchestrated the majority of the Titan offense, finishing with 32 and 22 assists, respectively. 

On the defensive side, Washko led the team with 20 digs, while French and Feeney notched double-double performances, finishing with 17 and 11 digs, respectively. Freshman Cailin Shannon (Bloomingdale, Ill.-Lake Park) led the Green and White with two blocks, one solo and one assisted, while five Titans were credited with one rejection. 

Illinois Wesleyan returns home for a midweek match against Carthage College Wednesday night, Sept. 20. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. inside the Shirk Center.
