Women’s Volleyball Wins Defensive Battle at Carroll

Titans open CCIW play 1-0

WAUKESHA, Wis. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's volleyball team opened College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin action with a four-set victory at Carroll University Wednesday night, Sept. 13, winning with set scores 25-21, 19-25, 25-18, and 25-19. The Titans improve to 2-5 overall, 1-0 in conference action, while Carroll drops to 3-5 (0-1 CCIW).

The Titan offense was led by sophomore Taylor French's (Romeoville, Ill.-Plainfield East) three aces and 15 kills, while freshman Cailin Shannon (Bloomingdale, Ill.-Lake Park) finished with seven. Freshman Eleanor Palmer (Chicago, Ill.-DePaul College Prep) finished with six kills on a monstrous .556 attack percentage. The Titans saw a trio of setters distribute the offense, as sophomore Katie Gund (Pewaukee, Wis.-Pewaukee), junior Abby Erdman (Aurora, Ill.-Metea Valley), and freshman Sophia Feeney (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) recorded 10, nine, and eight assists, respectively.

Defensively, the Titans saw a heavy net presence, as Palmer posted two solo and two assisted blocks. Shannon and junior Morgan Harrington (Plainfield, Ill.-Plainfield East) each added three total rejections, while senior Taylor Babec (Joliet, Ill.-Plainfield Central) finished with two. The Green and White finished the night with a season-best eight blocks in all.

Senior Faith Washko (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart-Griffin) collected a match-high 31 digs, while French added 13 to finish with a double-double performance.

The Green and White held advantages in kills (43-38), aces (9-5), total blocks (8-5), while CU edged the Titans out in digs (76-72), and assists (37-35).

After building up an 8-4 lead in the first set, the Pioneers tied things up at 13 apiece before seemingly taking control of the set. A Kim Nelson-Brown timeout at the 16-14 mark proved to be the difference maker for the Green and White, as the Titans responded quickly after. French buried a kill, followed by a Pios error, and Palmer posted back-to-back kills to put IWU back in front, 20-19, forcing a Carroll timeout.

IWU kept its attack after the break, notching three straight points, courtesy of a Pio error, French ace, and a kill from Shannon, upping the score to 23-19. CU burned its final timeout of the set, and posted a kill to break up the run. Feeney found French for the last point, as the sophomore notched her sixth kill of the set.

After dropping the second set, IWU came out firing in the third, taking five of the first six points. Following some back-and-forth action, French and Babec each notched a kill and three Pios errors pushed the score to 11-6, forcing a timeout from Carroll.

CU regrouped after the timeout to get the sideout, but IWU found its stride once again, going on an 8-2 run, upping the score to 20-8. The Pioneers chipped away at the gap, but Gund put the set away with the kill.

With the fourth set beginning with each team trading points, Illinois Wesleyan used a 9-0 run to take a commanding, 15-5, lead. The run was the result of kills from Carly Kuehl (St. Louis, Mo.-Parkway West) and Harrington, a French ace, and a few CU mistakes. The Titans cruised the rest of the way, and Kuehl sealed the match with her fifth kill, as IWU took the set 25-19.

Illinois Wesleyan returns to Wisconsin this weekend, as the Titans will compete in the 10th annual Sandy Schumacher Tournament, hosted by University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. IWU is slated for three games over the two-day tournament, Friday-Saturday, Sept. 15-16.
