Men’s Tennis Completes CCIW Fall Invite

Titans finish fall slate at ITA Regionals Friday-Sunday, Sept. 29-Oct. 1

PLAINFIELD, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's tennis team completed the two-day CCIW Fall Invite, hosted by North Central College, Saturday-Sunday, Sept. 9-10.

Sophomore Ian Turnbull (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) and freshman Thad Dillow (Effingham, Ill.-Effingham) notched seventh-place finishes at Singles Flight 1 and 2, respectively. Each finished with a record of 1-2.

Two Titans completed in singles Flight 6, as sophomore Griffin Hammond (Metamora, Ill.-Metamora Township) and junior Zeke Cross (Springfield, Ill.-Springfield) were slotted to face off for fifth place, but ultimately decided not to compete against one another. Hammond dropped his opening match to Hayden Friese of Carthage College with set scores of 6-1, 6-1, but battled back to take down Augustana College's Eliot Saint-Paul, 7-5, 3-6 (10-6). Cross also dropped his opener, falling 6-1, 6-0 to Daniel Urraca of North Central, before rebounding in his second match. Cross took down Carroll University's Layton Carls with set scores 7-6 (5), 6-2.

In doubles flight 3, Dillow and Hammond paired up to notch a fifth-place finish. The pair fell to Carthage, 8-3, in the opening match before taking down North Central, 8-6, and Millikin University, 8-7 (2).

Seniors Jordan Sibley-Diggs (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park & River Forest) and Joshua Cortez (Chicago, Ill.-Notre Dame College Prep) finished in fourth place in doubles flight 4. The duo opened the flight with an 8-1 loss to North Central, then lost a narrow battle with Carroll University, 8-7(5), to complete the flight.

The Titans close out the fall portion of the 2023-24 season at Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regionals Friday-Sunday, Sept. 29-Oct. 1., in Kalamazoo, Mich.
