NORMAL, Ill. - A new chapter in the memorable basketball rivalry between Illinois Wesleyan University and Illinois State University will begin as the two schools square off in an exhibition doubleheader Sunday, Oct. 29, at ISU's CEFCU Arena.
The doubleheader, presented by First Site, will kickoff with the women's game at 1 p.m., followed by the men 30 minutes after the first game's conclusion. Doors to CEFCU Arena will open at noon.
Tickets, which go on sale Oct. 2, cost $20 and provide admission to both games. IWU and ISU students will be admitted for free with a student ID. Parking information will be available closer to the date of competition.
The event is a community event with proceeds split between Western Avenue Community Center, and a mental health collaboration between the schools. Western Avenue Community Center, opened in 1926, is a social service organization and community center, working with people of all ages and reaching out into the neighborhood. Today, WACC serves more than 2,000 families per year in the community.
Illinois Wesleyan's men's team share a storied history with ISU, but have not squared off on the hardwood in more than 50 years. The Titans and Redbirds have 104 official meetings in the lengthy history, the last of which came Jan. 13, 1970. That game saw the Green and White knock off ISU, 69-68, in the annual crosstown rivalry as Titan captain Tom Gramkow's jumper from the top-of-the-key lifted IWU to victory.
The two women's hoops programs have never met in an official game. IWU went 5-6 against ISU in 11 games played versus the Redbirds during the 1970s.
There will be a press conference featuring both school's men's and women's head basketball coaches on Monday, August 21 at 2 p.m. inside the CEFCU Arena media room.
