Four Baseball Student-Athletes Tabbed CSC Academic All-District

Titans advance to Academic All-America ballot

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Senior Jalen Ping (Chatham, Ill.-Glenwood), juniors Jacob Cyrus (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard South) and Evan Hutson (Normal, Ill.-Normal West), along with sophomore Jimmy Gurgone (Mokena, Ill.-St. Laurence) of the Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team were announced as College Sports Communicators Academic All-District honorees Tuesday, May 16. The group will now advance to the Academic All-America ballot.

Ping, a finance major, hit .366 on the season in his final year donning the Green and White. He cranked out 68 hits, with 15 doubles, five triples, and three home runs. Ping ranked third on the team with 34 RBIs, while walking 20 times and holding a .426 on-base percentage. Starting all 45 games for the Titans, he posted 23 multi-hit games and was named the CCIW Hitter of the Week once.

Cyrus split time between the field and the mound for the Green and White. He hit .346 with 28 hits, four doubles, two triples, and two homers. Cyrus finished with 31 RBIs and six walks. On the bump, he posted a 3-4 record over 12 appearances. Cyrus finished with 37 strikeouts over 30.1 innings of work. 

Hutson, the recipient of the CCIW's Elite 26 Award presented to the student-athlete with the highest grade point average competing at the league's championship, played in 39 games making 32 starts for the Titans. He hit .328 on the season with 39 hits, 20 runs scored, three doubles, and two homers. 

An accounting major, Gurgone started 44 games for IWU. He hit .261 with 43 hits, 10 doubles, and five triples. He drove in 27, scored 28 runs, and recorded 10 multi-hit efforts. 

The Academic All-America team will be voted on and then announced June 7.
