Women’s Lacrosse Opens CCIW Play with Win Over Augustana

Titan offense explodes for 22 goals

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Powered behind a six point game from junior Britney Maldonado (Hoffman Estates, Ill.-James B. Conant), the Illinois Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team opened up College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play with a 22-5 win over Augustana College Saturday, April 8. The win pushed the Titans record to 5-7, overall, 1-0 in CCIW play, while Augustana drops to 5-4 overall, 0-1 in conference action. 

Maldonado led the match with five goals while adding an assist to her stellar performance. Senior Sarah Gleason (Park Ridge, Ill.-Maine South) added five points on three goals and two assists, while sophomore Mia Fiandaca (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles North) recorded four goals. 

Defensively, Fiandaca led the match with eight ground balls, tying the single game record. Maldonado added five, while senior Jennie Hubbard (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles East) scooped up four. Hubbard, Gleason, and Fiandaca each were credited with three caused turnovers. 

Sophomore Lizzie Rymarcsuk (Lake Zurich, Ill.-Saint Viator) recorded the win in goal, moving her record to 5-4 on the season, as she was credited with seven saves for a .583 save percentage. 

The Titans opened the match with six straight goals. Senior Carlyn Bratt (Palatine, Ill.-Palatine) cracked open the scoring, using a pass from Gleason to put the Titans up 1-0 with 13:44 left in the first period. Freshman Devon Hanson (Waukesha, Wis.-Waukesha West) added a goal of her own with 11:19 remaining, then Fiandaca buried a pass from sophomore Avery Setzler (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) to push the lead to 3-0 at the 10:56 mark. 

Maldonado recorded her first goal of the match, as she used a free position at the 10:13 mark to extend the lead to four. Fiandaca and freshman Anelise DiGiovanni (Lockport, Ill.-Lockport Township) each scored to move the lead to 6-0, but Augie would register a goal with one second remaining to close the first period at 6-1. 

Illinois Wesleyan cracked open the second period with three straight goals from Maldonado, freshman Carleigh Fountain (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg), and sophomore Mallory Mills (Schaumburg, Ill.-James B. Conant). After an Augie goal brought the lead to 9-2, Gleason and Fiandaca bumped the lead back up to 11-2 with 9:49 left to play in the first half. Each team would record one more goal to close the first half of action at 12-3 in favor of the Titans. 

The Green and White registered six straight goals to gain an 18-3 lead, ultimately securing the victory, as the Titans would close out with a 22-4 win.
