Women’s Lacrosse Cruises Past Cardinals

Titans move to 2-0 in CCIW

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team flew past North Central College, 18-8, Wednesday night, April 12, inside Tucci Stadium. The win, which marked the third straight for the Titans, boosted their record to 2-0 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin and 6-7 overall. NCC dropped to 3-10 (0-2 CCIW) with the lopsided loss.

Seven players notched goals in a balanced showing for the Green and White, led by sophomore Mia Fiandaca's (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles North) five-goal performance. Senior Sarah Gleason (Park Ridge, Ill.-Maine South), freshman Careligh Fountain (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg), and junior Britney Maldonado (Hoffman Estates, Ill.-James B. Conant) added hat tricks each. Fountain and Maldonado also tallied three assists apiece

Julia Raczykowski (Minooka, Ill.-Minooka Community) scooped up a team-best four ground balls and also recorded two caused turnovers. Fiandaca was credited with a team-high four caused turnovers.

Fiandaca cracked open the match, as she used a pass from Fountain to put the Titans up, 1-0, with 13:03 left in the first period. At the 8:39 mark, Fountain then fought her way through traffic to collect her first goal of the night. The Titans quickly marched back down the field, as Gleason fed Fiandaca a pass 17 seconds later to push the lead to three.

North Central ended the Titans' first scoring run, as the Cardinals cut the lead to two with 5:10 remaining. IWU answered, closing the first period of action with two more goals, as Maldonado and senior Carlyn Bratt (Palatine, Ill.-Palatine) put the Titans ahead, 5-1, at the end of the period.

The Cardinals notched the first goal of the second period, but Illinois Wesleyan rattled off five straight goals. The scoring run came courtesy of two goals from Gleason and Maldonado, while freshman Anelise DiGiovanni (Lockport, Ill.-Lockport Township) scored her first goal of the night. NCC produced a goal to close out the half, 10-3 in favor of the Titans.

Fountain buried a shot at the 10:33 mark in the second half, followed by a goal from freshman Devon Hanson (Waukesha, Wis.-Waukesha West) 19 seconds later, to put IWU ahead, 12-3, with 10:14 remaining in the third period. The Titans used a 5-1 advantage in the third period to help cruise to an 18-8 victory.

Illinois Wesleyan continues league play with a trip to Carroll University for a 12 p.m. start Saturday, April 15.
