Women’s Lacrosse Felled by Firebirds

Titans will be No. 4 seed in upcoming CCIW Tournament

KENOSHA, Wis. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team was overpowered by Carthage College Saturday, April 29, in its regular season finale. The Titans (7-10, 3-3 CCIW) were handed a 23-9 setback at the hands of the Firebirds (11-6, 4-2 CCIW). With the loss, IWU will be the No. 4 seed in next week's College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Tournament, as Carthage secured the No. 3 seed.

Junior Britney Maldonado (Hoffman Estates, Ill.-James B. Conant) paced the Green and White with five points on two goals and a team-high three assists. Senior Sarah Gleason (Park Ridge, Ill.-Maine South) added two goals and a helper for three points, while sophomore Mia Fiandaca (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles East) notched a hat trick. Freshman Devon Hanson (Waukesha, Wis.-Waukesha West) rounded out the scoring with two goals.

Fiandaca led the Green and White with six draw controls, while Hanson finished with four and senior Jennie Hubbard (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles North) added three.

Hubbard led the Titans with five ground balls and two caused turnovers. Sophomore Lizzie Rymarcsuk (Lake Zurich, Ill.-Saint Viator) registered seven saves in the loss.

After winning the draw control, Gleason cracked open the scoreboard to put the Titans on top, 1-0, 35 seconds into the game. Carthage recorded four straight goals to jump out to a 4-1 lead with 9:04 left to play in the first period, but goals from Hanson, Maldonado, and Fiandaca knotted the game at four apiece after the first 15 minutes of action.

The Firebirds opened the second period with a goal at the 14:10 mark to gain a 5-4 advantage. With 12:30 left in the first half, Maldonado capitalized on a free position to tie the score at 5-5.

Carthage rattled off three straight goals to take an 8-5 lead and never looked back as the Firebirds went for nine goals in the second quarter alone.

Trailing 13-7 out of halftime, IWU could not muster much offensively as Carthage outscored the Titans 10-2 over the final 30 minutes of play.

Illinois Wesleyan will travel to the University of Chicago Wednesday night, May 3, for the CCIW Tournament Semifinals. Game time will be announced shortly.
