Maldonado Sets Single-Game Points Record as Titans Soar Past Bluejays

Ten players record a goal in the win

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Junior Britney Maldonado (Hoffman Estates, Ill.-James B. Conant) etched her name into the record books as the Illinois Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team rolled past Elmhurst University, 22-4, Monday evening, April 24, inside Tucci Stadium. Maldonado scored five goals and tallied six assists to establish a new program single-game record with 11 points.

Behind Maldonado's record-setting point total, sophomore Mia Fiandaca (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles North) recorded six points on a game-high six goals. Senior Sarah Gleason (Park Ridge, Ill.-Maine South) added three goals and two helpers for five points, while sophomore Avery Setzler (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) finished with four on a goal and three assists.

A goal from freshman Maya Basan (Skokie, Ill.-Loyola Academy), the first of her career, opened the scoring and was the start of a three-goal run for the Green and White. Elmhurst broke the streak with a goal at the 11:26 mark in the first quarter before IWU took a 4-2 lead into the second quarter.

Powered by Maldonado, the Titans expanded their lead to seven, 11-4, at halftime. Setzler found Maldonado on a cut for Illinois Wesleyan's 11th goal of the day with 1:02 remaining in the half. The score was the junior's third of the day and gave her nine points on the evening, tying the program record with 30 minutes to play.

Senior Julia Raczykowski (Minooka, Ill.-Minooka Community) net the first goal of the second half, scoring off a free position just over a minute into the period. The goal marked the first in her career and pushed IWU ahead, 12-4.

A few minutes later, Maldonado eluded her defender and fired a goal into the mesh to extend the lead to double digits. Her fourth goal of the day pushed her point total to 10, breaking the program record previously held by Landry Elliott and  current head coach Grainne Kelly.

Senior Kelly Carlson (Western Springs, Ill.-Lyons Township) and Fiandaca each added a tally for the Titans in the final two minutes of the period as IWU held a 16-4 lead into the final 15.

The fourth quarter featured goals by seniors Jennie Hubbard (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles East), Carlyn Bratt (Palatine, Ill.-Palatine), and Rebecca Rymarcsuk (Lake Zurich, Ill.-Lake Zurich Senior) as the Green and White rolled to a 22-4 victory.

Illinois Wesleyan wraps up the regular season on the road Saturday, April 29, with a trip to Kenosha, Wis. There, IWU will take on Carthage College in a 1 p.m. matchup.
