BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - A balanced scoring effort powered the Illinois Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team past Edgewood College, 22-9, Wednesday night, March 8, under the lights at Tucci Stadium. The Titans improved to 2-3 on the year, winning their second straight game, while the Eagles dipped to 0-2.
A total of eight players found the back of the net in the win, as junior Britney Maldonado (Hoffman Estates, Ill.-James B. Conant) paced the Titans with a team-high five goals to go along with an assist. Sophomore
Mia Fiandaca (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles North) popped off for four goals and three assists to finish with a team-high seven points. Freshmen
Carleigh Fountain (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg),
Sadie Newton (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community), and
Devon Hanson (Waukesha, Wis.-Waukesha West) each posted a hat trick. Senior
Sarah Gleason (Park Ridge, Ill.-Maine South) added two goals and tied Fiandaca for the team lead with three assists, while sophomore
Avery Setzler (Huntley, Ill.-Huntley) tallied a goal and two helpers. Senior
Caryln Bratt (Palatine, Ill.-Palatine) rounded out the goal scores, with one on the night.
Newton led IWU with five draw controls, followed by Fountain and Fiandaca with three apiece. Gleason was credited with team-highs of five ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Sophomore Lizzie Rymarcsuk (Lake Zurich, Ill.-Saint Viator) notched the win in goal, making four saves, while senior
Rebecca Rymarcsuk (Lake Zurich, Ill.-Lake Zurich Senior) tallied three stops between the posts.
Illinois Wesleyan raced out to a 5-1 lead as senior Kelly Carlson (Western Springs, Ill.-Lyons Township) forced a turnover and quickly got the ball ahead for a successful clear. Fiandaca finished off the play with a goal to up the IWU lead to four with 8:38 left in the clock. Fiandaca's goal proved the be the third in a six-goal run for the Titans, that saw Hanson bury a feed from Fiandaca to boost the advantage to 7-1.
Edgewood cut into the lead briefly, but Illinois Wesleyan held a 9-4 lead after the opening period.
After a slow scoring second quarter, the Titans came out of the half with an 11-6 edge. Edgewood scored the first goal of the half to pull within four, but IWU rattled off 11 unanswered goals to break the game open, 22-7.
IWU hits the road for spring break, beginning with a stop at Transylvania University Saturday, March 11. Game time is slated for 1 p.m. ET.
