Kelly Secures First Coaching Win as Women’s Lacrosse Takes Down Augsburg

Titans win first game of 2023 season

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - After many wins as a player for the Illinois Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team, Grainne Kelly picked up her first career collegiate win as a head coach, as the Titans took down Augsburg, 22-8, Saturday, March 4. Illinois Wesleyan picks up its first win of the 2023 season to improve to 1-3 on the year, while the Auggies drop to 1-2.

IWU saw eight different players record goals in the match, as sophomore Mia Fiandaca (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles North) led the team with a career-best six goals. Freshmen Devon Hanson (Waukesha, Wis.-Waukesha West) and Carleigh Fountain (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg) followed with five and four, respectively. Freshman Anelise DiGiovanni (Lockport, Ill.-Lockport Township) made her collegiate debut one to remember, as she tallied two goals to collect her first career points.

DiGiovanni showed her ability to play both ways, as she scooped up three ground balls and caused two turnovers, both tied for team-bests. Hanson also picked up three ground balls, while her and senior Sarah Gleason (Park Ridge, Ill.-Maine South) each recorded a match-high six draw controls. Sophomore Lizzie Rymarcsuk (Lake Zurich, Ill.-Saint Viator) earned the win between the posts, as she had five saves in 30:00 minutes of action.

Senior Carlyn Bratt (Palatine, Ill.-Palatine) opened up the game as she used a pass from Fountain to put the Titans up 1-0 with 13:09 to go in the first quarter. Auggie would remain close with IWU, as they would respond to each of the Titans first three goals to even the score at 3-3.

Junior Hannah Trousdale (Mt. Prospect, Ill.-Hoffman Estates) found Fountain with 1:18 remaining in the first quarter to begin a run of nine unanswered goals for the Titans, who went into halftime up 13-4. IWU would sustain its large lead until the end, winning its first game of the young season 22-8.

The Titans return to action Wednesday night, March 8 against Edgewood College at 6 p.m. inside Tucci Stadium. Live stats and a live stream of the game can be found on iwusports.com under the women's lacrosse schedule.
