Women’s Lacrosse Looks to Bounce Back at Lynchburg

Titans will face the Hornets for second time in program history

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - After dropping its match to Transylvania University Saturday, March 11, the Illinois Wesleyan University makes the trek to Lynchburg, Va. for a battle with the University of Lynchburg Tuesday, March 14 at 4 p.m. ET. The match will serve as the second leg of the spring break trip for the Titans (2-4). 

The match against Transylvania (3-2) saw sophomore Lizzie Rymarcsuk (Lake Zurich, Ill.-Saint Viator) stop a career-best 21 shots, the second-most saves in a game in program history, and just one shy of the record. Junior Britney Maldonado (Hoffman Estates, Ill.-James B. Conant) led the offense with three points, while freshmen Devon Hanson (Waukesha, Wis.-Waukesha West) and Carleigh Fountain (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg), and sophomore Mia Fiandaca (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles North) each scored two goals in the 14-7 loss. 

Offensively, Fiandaca and Fountain lead the Titans with 15 points through the first six contests. Fountain and Hanson sit at the top with 13 goals apiece. Senior Sarah Gleason (Park Ridge, Ill.-Maine South) and sophomore Avery Setzler (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) each have a team-best six assists on the season. Gleason leads the Green and White with 20 draw controls, closely followed by Hanson's 19. 

On the defensive side, Rymarcsuk (2-3) has shown great potential between the posts, as she has made 65 saves with a .508 save percentage in 267:03 minutes of action. The Lake Zurich, Ill. native also leads the Green and White with 20 ground balls. Gleason follows with 15 ground balls, and is second on the team in caused turnovers with eight. Senior Julia Raczykowski (Minooka, Ill.-Minooka Community) has forced a team-best nine turnovers.

Lynchburg (1-4) enters the match after picking up its first win of the season Saturday, March 11, defeating Lebanon Valley 18-14. 

The first and only meeting between the two teams came on March 12, 2016. The Hornets defeated the Titans 13-8 to win the initial bout, handing IWU its first loss of the season. Now-Head Coach Grainne Kelly scored a goal in the contest.
