Shorthanded Titans Fade in Spar with Spartans

Titans return to action Saturday, March 4 at home against Augsburg

AURORA, Ill. - Battling a slew of injuries, the Illinois Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team fell at Aurora University Wednesday, March 1, 16-5. The Titans drop to 0-3 on the season, while Aurora opens the 2023 campaign 1-0.

Senior Sarah Gleason (Park Ridge, Ill.-Maine South) notched a hat-trick in the setback, using two assists from freshman Sadie Newton (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) to do so. Freshman Carleigh Fountain (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg) and senior Carlyn Bratt (Palatine, Ill.-Palatine) finished the game with one goal each, while sophomore Avery Setzler (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) had an assist to round out the scoring for the Green and White.

Gleason scooped up a team-high three ground balls, and seniors Julia Raczykowski (Minooka, Ill.-Minooka Community) and Jennie Hubbard (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles East) each caused two turnovers. Sophomore Lizzie Rymarcsuk (Lake Zurich, Ill.-Saint Viator) played the entire 60 between the posts as she tied her career-best 14 saves.

Newton found Gleason off a cut to tie the game 1-1 with 0:59 to go in the first quarter. The assist for Newton marked her first collegiate point.

The second quarter saw the Spartans jump out to a 3-1 lead with 10:33 to goal in the first half. Setzler fed Bratt who notched her first point of the season with a goal to bring the game to within one. Just over a minute later, Gleason picked up her second goal of the game to tie it at three all with 2:40 remaining in the second quarter. Aurora scored with 17 left in the period to take a 4-3 halftime lead.

Aurora opened the second half of the game with three goals to jump out to a 7-3 lead, but the Titans stopped the scoring run when Gleason completed her hat-trick with a goal at 5:41 in the third quarter, coming off a pass from Newton. AU never trailed from there, as the Titans ran out of steam, falling 16-5.
