BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -
The Illinois Wesleyan University men's basketball team faded in a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin loss to Elmhurst University Wednesday night, Feb. 1, inside the Shirk Center. EU closed the game on a 20-7 run over the final five minutes to down IWU, 74-64. With the loss, the Titans record sits at 10-10 overall and 5-6 in league play, while the Bluejays bolstered their record to 14-6 (6-5 CCIW).

Senior Lucas Heflen (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles North) scored a game-high 20 points, while fellow senior Cody Mitchell (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles East) added 16 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

The Green and White finished 23-for-57 from the floor, shooting 40.4 percent, and went 7-for-18 from three-point range. The Titans finished 11-for-17 at the free throw line. Meanwhile, the Bluejays went 24-for-51 (47.1 percent) overall and 9-for-26 from distance. EU made 17-of-25 free throw attempts on the night.

IWU was outrebounded, 36-27, but won the turnover battle, 14-9. The Titans corralled seven steals, with Mitchell, Heflen, and sophomore Hakim Williams (Round Lake, Ill.-Round Lake) tallying two apiece. EU held advantages in points in the paint (24-22), second chance points (16-9), fast break scoring (7-2), and bench points (19-9).

Elmhurst struck first, but Illinois Wesleyan answered with a 9-0 run to charge ahead by seven with 14:22 on the clock. The run kicked off with a Heflen three and saw a mid-range jumper by junior Evan Schneider (St. Louis, Mo.-Ladue). After Heflen converted on a physical drive to the hoop, sophomore Harrison Wilmsen (St. Louis, Mo.-Priory) found sharp-shooter Trey Bazzell (Fairbury, Ill.-Prairie Central) for a three-ball.

IWU's lead, its largest of the half, did not last long as EU used a 13-3 run to claim a 15-12 lead with 10:55 remaining in the half. Neither team mustered much of a lead from there as the game remained a one-possession game into halftime with the Bluejays clinging to a 30-29 edge.

After trading off small runs to begin the second half, free throws by Mitchell and a three-pointer from Sroka gave IWU a 54-52 lead with just over six minutes to play.

Mitchell kicked outside for another IWU three, this one from Williams, to put the Titans on top, 57-54, with 5:40 left.

Elmhurst stole the momentum from there, tying the game at 57 before using a rare four-point play to stake a 61-57 lead with four minutes left.

The Bluejays capitalized at the free throw line down the stretch to hand the Titans a 10-point defeat.

Illinois Wesleyan hosts Carroll University Saturday, Feb. 4, for a 7:15 p.m. tipoff. The game will serve as the Titans' annual PinkZone contest.
