BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -
Big nights from the senior duo of Lucas Heflen (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles North) and Cody Mitchell (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles East) propelled the Illinois Wesleyan University men's basketball team to a 79-61 win over Carroll University inside the Shirk Center Saturday night, Feb. 4. 


Heflen dropped a game-high 25 points, aided by four three-pointers, while Mitchell posted a 24-point, 15-rebound double-double. Junior Ryan Sroka (Lake in the Hills, Ill.-Huntley) added 13 points and seven boards.

The Titans shot 44.6 percent (29-of-65) from the floor and 38.5 percent (10-of-26) from beyond the arc. The tough defense from the Green and White held Carroll to a 23-of-56 shooting clip (41.1 percent) and a 10-of-26 performance from three. Illinois Wesleyan additionally won the rebounding battle, 44-33, as well as points in the paint, 34-28. The Titans additionally converted 18 points off turnovers, compared to the Pio's six. 

The Titans blitzed out to a 5-0 lead as junior Evan Schneider (St. Louis, Mo.-Ladue) found Heflen for the game's first three-pointer of the night and never looked back.

Sophomore Trey Bazzell (Fairbury, Ill.-Prairie Central) drilled a three-ball and Heflen converted a free throw off a flop technical to extend the lead to double digits. Sophomore Marko Anderson (Park Ridge, Ill.-Maine South) followed with back-to-back buckets as IWU's lead stood 28-13.

A five-point run by Heflen made it a 20-point game, 37-17, but the Pioneers scored seven straight points to trim the Illinois Wesleyan advantage to 37-24 at halftime.

Carroll kept clawing back in the second half, extending its run to 13-0, as IWU saw its advantage shrink to seven, 37-30.

Sophomore Hakim Williams (Round Lake, Ill.-Round Lake) slipped a pass to Heflen for an easy layup to get the Titans back on track. Sroka later drilled a pair of threes to move the lead back into double digits, 59-44. 

Freshman Nathan Boldt (Deer Park, Ill.-Barrington) threw down a two-handed dunk to bolster a 72-53 IWU advantage, and Mitchell tacked on buckets down the stretch to close out a 79-61 victory.

Illinois Wesleyan is back at it Wednesday night, Feb. 8, with a short trip to Decatur, Ill. for a bout with Millikin University. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. inside the Griswold Center.
