Swimming and Diving Finishes First Meet of 2023-24 Season

Fudge places first in the 100-yard backstroke

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's and women's swimming and diving teams left its season opener with losses Friday, Oct. 13 against Division II Lewis University. The men's squad fell to the Flyers, 221-41, while the women were defeated by a score of 197-65. IWU competed in 28 events at the Lewis Pool in Romeoville, Ill.

The Titans opened the meet with the women's team earning a second-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay, as sophomore Kayleigh Kuschewski (Batavia, Ill.-Batavia), freshmen Abi Zelikman (Oakwood Hills, Ill.-Prairie Ridge) and Olivia Kula (Pekin, Ill.-Pekin Community), and senior Hannah Murray (West Chicago, Ill.-St. Charles East) combined for a time of 1:56.37. The men's relay followed with a third-place finish, secured by sophomore Jay Jenkins (Aurora, Ill.-West Aurora), senior Donald Tichy (Chicago, Ill.-Chicago HS for Agricultural Science), and juniors Carter Dilger (Sellersburg, Ind.-Jeffersonville) and Alex Kula (Pekin, Ill.-Pekin Community) clocked a time of 1:40.92. 

For the women, junior Hadley Fudge (Stanford, Ill.-University High) picked up IWU's lone victory, as she finished with a time of 1:01.65 in the 100-yard backstroke. Fudge finished the 50-yard breaststroke with a time of 32.08, good for a second-place finish. Olivia Kula made her collegiate debut, taking third place in the 200-yard freestyle, clocking in with a time of 2:03.24, before going on to earn a second-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly (1:05.03). 

Fellow freshman Sam Borre (Hoffman Estates, Ill.-James B. Conant) placed third in the 500-yard freestyle in her collegiate debut with a 5:38.36 time.  Junior Emily Marks (Carly, Ill.-Cary Grove) placed third in the 100-yard freestyle with a (58.49). Senior Jackie Rae Kelch (Peoria, Ill.-Notre Dame) notched a second-place finish in the 50-yard backstroke with a time of 30.09. 

For the men, Alex Kula competed in the 200-yard freestyle, taking third with a time of 1:53.92. Jenkins placed third in both the 50 and the 100-yard backstroke with times of 26.16 and 56.34. 

The Titans saw senior Ethan Lowder (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) notch a second-place finish in the 50-yard butterfly (23.84), while placing third twice, as he clocked a 49.92 in the 100-yard freestyle and a 55.65 in the 100-yard butterfly. Freshman Jack Hansen (Naperville, Ill.-Benet Academy) earned third-place in the 100-yard breaststroke with a 1:03.31 time.  

Illinois Wesleyan finished the meet with each team secured a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The women's team saw Fudge, Calcagno, Marks, and Olivia Kula clock in at 1:45.25, while the men's team of Lowder, Hanson, Alex Kula, and freshman Rylan Nelson (Normal, Ill.-University High) finished with a time of 1:30.05. 

The Titans return to the pool to host the IWU Halloween Invite Saturday, Oct. 28 in Fort Natatorium. The meet is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. in Bloomington.
