Women’s Volleyball Comes Up Short In Five-Set Battle with Vikings

Titans Enter October with a 10-4, 2-1 CCIW record

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - After dropping the first two sets of the game, the No. 21 Illinois Wesleyan University women's volleyball team rallied to take the next two sets from Augustana College to push the match to a full five-sets Sept. 30, in Rock Island, Ill. The decisive fifth set went to the home team, ending the Titans (10-4, 2-1 CCIW) thrilling comeback hopes.

After two sets dominated by the Vikings (13-4, 2-1 CCIW), who took the first two 25-19 and 25-17, Illinois Wesleyan ended the possibility of a sweep, winning the third set, 25-21. Trailing 13-11, junior Courtney Heffren (Eureka, Ill.-Eureka) went on a service run to bring the Titans ahead 15-13. IWU took six of the last seven points, capped off with a kill from junior Taylor Babec (Joliet, Ill.-Plainfield Central), to keep the match alive.

The fourth set saw six lead changes before the Titans finally gained control. The Green and White won the last four points to take the fourth set, 25-20, and pushed for a winner-takes-all fifth set.

Despite the late rally, Illinois Wesleyan dropped the fifth set 15-10, ending the possibility of a three-set comeback.

The Titans recorded 60 kills as a team, but recorded a mere .033 hitting percentage. Freshman Taylor French (Romeoville, Ill.-Plainfield East) continued her hot freshman campaign with a team-best 17 kills and four aces. Sophomore Abby Erdman (Aurora, Ill.-Metea Valley) led the team with 28 assists on the night, followed by junior Jordan Pierce (Bonfield, Ill.-Herscher) with a career-best 23.

Junior Faith Washko (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart Griffin) had a team-high 29 digs in the five sets, adding to her stellar junior campaign. She also recorded three aces for the Green and White. French was credited with 23 digs for her eighth double-double of the season.

Illinois Wesleyan will see a quick turnaround, as first serve against Cornell College is scheduled for 10 a.m. tomorrow, Oct. 1. The Titans will face Coe College at 2 p.m. to conclude their appearance in the Cornell Quadrangular. The live stream for both games can be found here, and live stats can be accessed here
