Women’s Lacrosse Stumbles on Senior Day

Final home games for O’Malley, Jones, Elliott, and Piwowarczyk

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team saw its Senior Day spoiled by Carthage College Saturday, April 30, at Tucci Stadium. Playing through a two hour lightning delay, IWU (5-12, 3-3 CCIW) was outlasted by CC (15-2, 5-1 CCIW), 18-12, in the regular season finale.

With the loss, the Titans will be the No. 4 seed in next week's College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Tournament, while the Firebirds earned the No. 2 seed.

Sophomore Britney Maldonado (Hoffman Estates, Ill.-Conant) kicked off the scoring at the 12:06 mark to give the Titans a 1-0 lead. Carthage tallied two in the remainder of the first as senior Landry Elliott (Milwaukee, Wis.-Nicolet) tied the game with just 55 second left in the quarter, 2-2.

A goal by senior Bridget O'Malley (Chicago, Ill.-Marist) put the Titans out in front, 4-3, but the Firebirds stormed back with a four-goal spurt to charge ahead, 7-4, at half.

Junior Kelly Carlson (Western Springs, Ill.-Lyons Township) found O'Malley for another goal off the opening draw of the third period to trim the Carthage lead to two, 7-5.

The Firebirds outscored the Titans 6-4 in the third quarter, with the last strike coming with 43 seconds on the clock. The goal, which put Carthage on top 13-8, also began the start of a two-hour delay.

After the lengthy pause, Elliott notched back-to-back goals to pull the Titans within three, 13-10, with 12:38 to play, but the comeback burst ran out of steam. The Firebirds used a four-goal run to push ahead, 18-10, ultimately putting the game out of reach as IWU fell, 18-12.

Elliott finished with a team-best four goals, while senior Cassandra Jones (Elk Grove Village, Ill.-Conant) tallied three goals and an assist. O'Malley, returning to action for the first time since early in the season, net two goals and dished out a helper for three points. Maldonado was credited with a team-high four assists.

Jones paced the Titans with eight draw controls, while junior Sarah Gleason (Park Ridge, Ill.-Maine South) secured seven and tied junior Jennie Hubbard (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles East) for the team lead with four ground balls. Junior Julia Raczykowski (Minooka, Ill.-Minooka Community) forced a team-best two caused turnovers.

As the No. 4 seed in the CCIW Tournament, Illinois Wesleyan will face top-seeded University of Chicago Wednesday night, May 4, in the Windy City at 6 p.m.
