Women's Lacrosse Defeats Concordia-Chicago

Titans move to 1-3 on the season

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team picked up its first win of the season in convincing fashion Sunday afternoon, March 6, at Tucci Stadium as the Titans took down Concordia University-Chicago, 16-7. IWU is now 1-3 on the season, while CUC dipped to 0-1.

Concordia Chicago struck first, but Illinois Wesleyan answered with six straight goals to take control. Senior Cassandra Jones (Elk Grove Village, Ill.-Conant) got things rolling with a free position goal with 12:40 to go in the period. Fellow senior Landry Elliott (Milwaukee, Wis.-Nicolet) followed with back-to-back scores, one assisted by Jones and the other off a dish from freshman Mia Fiandaca (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles North). Junior Carlyn Bratt (Palatine, Ill.-Palatine) buried a shot in the net less than a minute after Elliott's second goal before junior Sarah Gleason (Park Ridge, Ill.-Maine South) closed out the quarter with back-to-back goals.

Leading 6-1, the Titans saw the Cougars cut into their advantage with two strikes in the first three minutes of the second period.

IWU once again responded, this time with four straight goals, to take a 10-3 lead at halftime.

The Cougars pulled within five in the second half, but the Titans maintained a comfortable cushion as the Green and White notched its first win of the season.

Elliott powered the IWU attack, scoring four goals and adding three assists for a seven-point afternoon. Gleason tied for the team-lead with four goals, while Fiandaca added a hat trick and an assist. Jones and Bratt finished with two goals each, with Jones also recording an assist and team-highs of five caused turnovers and four ground balls. Sophomore Darby Moore (St. Louis, Mo.-Metro) rounded out the scoring with one goal.

The Rymarcsuk sisters split time in between the posts for the Green and White. Junior Rebecca Rymarcsuk (Lake Zurich, Ill.-Lake Zurich Senior) got the start and earned the win after making six stops. Freshman Lizzie Rymarcsuk (Lake Zurich, Ill.-St. Viator) racked up a career-high-tying eight saves in the second half.

Illinois Wesleyan wraps up its three-game homestand Thursday, March 10, as host to non-conference foe Aurora University. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Tucci Stadium.
