Women's Lacrosse Spurned by Spartans

Early deficit too much to overcome as Titans dip to 1-4

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team dropped a non-conference tilt, 10-5, to Aurora University Thursday, March 10, at Tucci Stadium.

Aurora (2-2) charged out to a 4-0 lead before Sarah Gleason (Park Ridge, Ill.-Maine South) found freshman Mia Fiandaca (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles North) for Illinois Wesleyan's (1-4) first of the game. Fiandaca's goal, her fifth of the season, pulled IWU within three, 4-1, with 8:24 to play in the second quarter.

After the Spartans answered with a goal of their own, senior Cassandra Jones (Elk Grove Village, Ill.-Conant) scored off a rebound and junior Rebecca Rymarcsuk (Lake Zurich, Ill.-Lake Zurich Senior) made a huge save on an AU free position shot to maintain the three-goal difference into halftime.

Sophomore Britney Maldonado (Hoffman Estates, Ill.-Conant) broke open the third quarter with a goal on a heady pass from senior Landry Elliott (Milewaukee, Wis.-Nicolet) to trim the deficit to two, 5-3, with 13:43 remaining in the period.

Gleason added a pair of goals in the third, but it was not enough to overcome the Spartans' early edge as IWU fell, 10-5.

Rymarcsuk finished with 10 saves, while Jones along with juniors Jennie Hubbard (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles East) and Julia Raczykowski (Minooka, Ill.-Minooka Community) tied for the team lead with three caused turnovers. Jones also led the team with seven ground balls and two draw controls.

Offensively, Gleason picked up two goals and an assist, while Elliott tallied two assists.

Illinois Wesleyan embarks on a two-game west coast swing beginning Monday, March 14, at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. Game time is set for 7 p.m. PST in Claremont, Calif.
