Gleason led with four goals

LA CROSSE, Wis. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team fought off the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in a 12-11 victory over the Eagles Saturday, March 26. The Titans were led by junior Sarah Gleason (Park Ridge, Ill.-Maine South) who notched four goals.

IWU saw themselves down, 2-0 early with 11:15 to go in the opening quarter. Gleason stepped up for the Green and White scoring the next three goals for a hatrick and the first IWU lead of the game, 3-2.

Senior Cassandra Jones (Elk Grove Village, Ill.-Conant) added to the Titans scoring with a goal of her own from fellow senior Landry Elliott (Milwaukee, Wis.-Nicolet) to widen the gap 4-2. UWL capitalized on a last minute opportunity to end the quarter trailing, 4-3.

An almost even match in the second quarter saw the Titans pick up three goals to the Eagles two. UWL opened the scoring in the second 15 at the 13:27 mark to tie the game 4-4. Both teams saw opportunities, but it wasn't until the 2:44 mark that the Eagles took back the lead 5-4. Although junior Carlyn Bratt (Palatine, Ill.-Palatine) answered shortly after, with 2:23 to go, tying the game back up at five.

In similar fashion, UWL net its sixth goal of the day with 41 seconds remaining on the scoreboard as IWU's Hannah Trousdale (Hoffman Estates, Ill.-Hoffman Estates) also scored the Titans' sixth goal of the day with only three seconds left. Trousdale tied the game back up, 6-6 to end the first half.

Freshman Mia Fiandaca (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles North) opened the half with a goal at the 10:52 mark to put the Titans in the lead 7-6. UWL shifted to a different gear, as they grabbed three unanswered goals to take back the lead 9-7. Only 22 seconds after UWL's latest goal, Jones put an end to its run, closing the deficit as IWU still trailed, 9-8.

At the 6:54 mark the Eagles found the back of IWUs net once more, breaking the double-digit threshold, 10-8 for UWL. Gleason grabbed her fourth goal of the day to tie her single game career-high to pull the Titans within one 10-9. UWL got another late goal to end the quarter 11-9.

In the final 15, IWU opened the quarter with two goals. Fiandaca scored at the 12:52 mark to put IWU at 10. Elliot grabbed her first of the day just 42 seconds later for the sixth tie of the match, 11-11.

With just under two minutes to go in the game, Jones scored her third of the day for the hatrick to take the lead 12-11 that forced an UWL timeout.  The Titans maintained the lead and fought off the Eagles to secure the win, 12-11.
