Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Women’s Lacrosse Upended by UW-River Falls

Titans early lead erased with 11-goal run

LA CROSSE, Wis. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team dropped a non-conference neutral site match to the University of Wisconsin-River Falls Sunday, March 27, on the campus of University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. The Titans (2-8) suffered a 16-8 setback as the Falcons (8-0) used an 11-goal run to down the Green and White.

Sophomore Britney Maldonado (Hoffman Estates, Ill.-Conant) found freshman Mia Fiandaca (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles North) for the game's first goal just 44 seconds into the game, before seniors Landry Elliott (Milwaukee, Wis.-Nicolet) and Cassandra Jones (Elk Grove Village, Ill.-Conant) connected 26 seconds later to give IWU an early 2-0 edge.

An unassisted goal by UW-River Falls cut the lead in half, but sophomore Sarah Gleason (Park Ridge, Ill.-Maine South) responded with one of her own at the 10:28 mark. Eliott then fed sophomore Hannah Trousdale (Mt. Prospect, Ill.-Hoffman Estates) to give the Titans a 4-1 lead with 7:22 on the clock in the first quarter.

After the Falcons closed out the period with a goal to trim the Titans' lead to 4-2 into the second quarter, UWRF net another goal. Gleason once again responded with an unassisted goal to push Illinois Wesleyan ahead, 5-3, but UW-River Falls answered with an 11-goal run to take a 14-5 advantage into the final 15.

IWU outscored the Falcons 3-2 in the final stanza, with Jones, Elliott, and Fiandaca finding the back of the net, but it was not enough to overcome the UWRF run as the Titans fell, 16-8.

Fiandaca tied Jones and Gleason for the team lead with two goals, while Elliott was the Titans' points leader with a goal and two assists to finish with three points. Fiandaca paced IWU with six ground balls, and junior Kelly Carlson (Western Springs, Ill.-Lyons) scooped up three.

Junior Rebecca Rymarcsuk (Lake Zurich, Ill.-Lake Zurich Senior) got the start and finished with five saves, while freshman Lizzie Rymarcsuk (Lake Zurich, Ill.-Saint Viator) made eight stops in the second half.

The Green and White will return to action for its College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin opener Saturday, April 2, at Tucci Stadium against Carroll University. Game time is set for 12 p.m. and will be part of Titan athletics' support for St. Jude.
