Men’s Tennis Secures Win Against Stevenson, 8-1

Titans play two games tomorrow, March 17 in final day of spring break trip

ORLANDO, Fla. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's tennis team took its first win of its spring break trip in the sunshine state Wednesday, March 16. The Titans (2-4) defeated Stevenson University (2-6) 8-1. 

Senior Demetrios Triantafel (Indian Head Park, Ill.-LaGrange Lyons) led the way for the Green and White as he did not give up a single game at No. 1 singles. Triantafel took the match with set scores of 6-0, 6-0. Junior Carter Burk (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal U High), senior Shanku Nair (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community), fifth-year senior Justin Piotrowski (Palatine, Ill.-Fremd), and freshman Zeke Cross (Springfield, Ill.-Springfield) won in their respective matches at No. 2, 4, 5, and 6 singles, respectively. 

Cross took his match into three sets dropping 6-3 in the first, before coming back to take the second 6-2. In the tiebreaker set, Cross took home the win, 10-5, for his fourth singles win in the Green and White jersey. 

The Titans swept in doubles play as the relatively new pairings this season saw success against Stevenons. At No. 1 doubles Triantafell and sophomore Ryan McCoy (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Rolling Meadows) took out the Mustangs duo 8-4 for their first win as a duo this season. 

Similarly Bloomington natives, Burk and Nair notched their first win as a pairing with a score of 8-2 at No. 2 doubles. Finally, at No. 3 doubles, Piotrowski and Cross battled it out against Stevenson's, Simeon Smith and Sathwik Madasi, to take the match 8-7 (1-0). 

IWU returns to the court tomorrow, Thursday March 17, for some double-header action with Colby-Sawyer University at 11:30 a.m. ET and Millsaps to follow.
